Is it polite to ask the opponent to resign a lost position?

Why do people keep asking this question? Don't they know they're lost already? Don't they know when to give up?

What is a "lost" potion to one person, isnt to another.

If someone asked you to resign in an OTB chess tournament game, would you take offense and get upset?

If you struggled on for 15 more moves or so, or soaked up another hour or so before resigning, and the other player looked at you with disgust and irritation like "You dumb dumb, why didn't you resign earlier and saved us some time?" Would you get offended?

If my opponent started giving me dirty looks because I didn't resign when he wanted me to, I would rightly conclude that he was an asshole

There have been chess encounters where both players get up from the table believing and concluding that the other player was an a-hole.

In correspondence chess it can be annoying to stall the inevitable loss. Nevertheless, asking the opponent to resign is pretty rude.

My system of resignation:
If I am down by 5 points of material, I will resign. Unless I see a tactic, or a possible outcome.

All reasons i have resigned a game in OTB play:

1. Lunch

2. My opponent needed the prize money

3. Playoffs were on

Only if you ask politely. "Dear fellow chap, I do believe indubitably that the situation here can best resolved most amicably by the utmost importance to our valuable time by concluding that I have won this game. Therefore I do propose on this fine day to enjoy that we get along with it most expeditiously.  Sincerely, "

Just don't do it in English if he isn't from England.

The recipient upon hearing this, makes his move, and before pressing his clock says, "My dear chap, that was a very politely stated request and I do want to thank you for phrasing it so nicely.  And so I have a counterproposal that should suit both of us even better:  Let us agree to a draw, and retire to the adjoining room for a post-mortem analysis.  Be a good fellow, and kindly assent."

He then presses the clock and smiles sweetly at you.

No. Not at all. You're only supposed to ask your opponent to resign won positions.

I would be ashamed of myself for not resigning earlier and therefore wasting everybody's time.

Very true!

A female bystander sees these two guys shooting dirty looks at each other, and scratching their foreheads with only their middle finger.

She wonders silently, "Why are these two a-holes so angry at each other over a silly chess game?  It's just a game!  Don't these two idiots know that computers rule chess?  What was the name of that thing by Google?  Oh yeah, AlphaZero.  Two angry morons who'd get wiped out by AlphaZero.  Like watching children getting angry over tic-tac-toe.  I'll never understand men. So stupid to get worked up over a game that's been conquered by computers."

I find the game much more enjoyable, the less serious i take it.
