Is it possible to be better OTB chess than online?

<ziggy_zugzwang> Thank you for saying that. We're cool now.

The funny thing is, I want to be an NM for the chess.com title, partly.

But I just realized that if/when I get to NM, the benefits I want for free (Chess mentor unlimited, video lessons, etc) won't be useful to me anymore, since I'll have already reached my title tongue.png

On the other hand if you are bad online.. unless you have OTB title nobody will respect your high OTB rating if you are crap at blitz ... and low rated beats you. Because you directly show how bad you are at chess right at that very moment when you lost vs some unknown online patzer..

lmao. Blitz is how you gauge talent? Are you joking? Blitz isn't even chess, dude. It bares almost no semblance. I'm proud to admit that my blitz rating is barely over 1900 OTB. Your mouse-handling ability and internet connection matter as much as your skill, online. Anybody I lose to in blitz online, given my blitz rating, I'd wipe off the board in a G120 i/30 type situation. If you honestly think blitz means anything regarding chess ability, you're deluded.

I am sorry but that is typical patzer level opinion - mouse skills and internet connection - just typical excuse of someone who never plays blitz online or he is bad at it. - You there noo i did not lost you cheated with time or you did impossible move with the mouse... Oh you just move pieces, fast with mouse etc you have no chess skills ... I will smash you OTB rofl..

lol, you're calling me a patzer? You're a 1700 FIDE, bruv. Stand down. I'd wipe you off the board without even a second thought in an OTB tournament. You may have forgotten this, but I am a 2100. You honestly think you'd stand a chance? Also, the real patzer here is you, for thinking  blitz is actually relevant. You don't have enough time to think, not enough time to analyze, not enough time to come up with firm ideas. You just throw out garbage on intuition and hope it works. I've played enough blitz to know that. You can have as much ego as you like, but at the end of the day, I'm simply stronger than you are. So many dumb, weak players who think that blitz is actually relevant to skill, dear god. Get your head out of your arse, for real.

It's my provisional rating had winning +10 against 1930 but gave away the game , and drew with lower rated 'cuz i was late almost an hour. I might be underrated and you most likely OVERRATED. .You are 2100 USCF? What is this 1850 FIDE? I don't believe in you. Typical overrated american with big ego. Come here and your 2100 rating will vanish. We Russians/Bulgarians/ are stronger than most. And what you call "classic" there with your silly club like 45+5 time controls, stand no chance in 90+30 serious fide rated tournaments. You are a higher rated but still a patzer live with it.

When you go outside and want to play a game of chess with somebody you don't play 3 hours game, baga. You play blitz. And you will be crushed. ~End of story.

You think we play 45+5 here? Sure, it happens, but that ain't where my rating is coming from. I play mostly in open tournaments. Y'know, with 10-30 second increments, SD, and a long starting time control? Oh, and go ahead and claim I'm overrated and you're underrated. Problem is, you've got no proof. Oh, and that's not how the conversion rate works, it's generally that FIDE is 100 lower than USCF. I'm not gonna bring up my FIDE, but let's just say that my first FIDE rated tournament I ever played in, I was an 1800 in, bombed in, and have only played 4 since and have had performance ratings over 2000 in all of them.

Yeah, probably, but it'd be nice to have. I'd not complain about getting free stuff, I can tell you that much.

Something I'm doing now is playing one of my daily games on a real board. Make all calculations on the real board and don't even look at the online board except to receive your opponent's move.
Avatar of AIM-AceMove

Not only that but if i have to believe  on interent someones skills and rating i will check his online blitz rating or title next to his name , rather than trusting what says on his profile uscf/fide rating - you can put any number there.  Serious and strong OTB players usually have their name as nickname and/or a profile picture of themself with real name below and even city.

at least in OTB games, you can distract your opponent by sneezing

you can't do that in online chess

and then you can win the board game

Avatar of bluejibb

you can also dress sexy in an OTB game too

Avatar of lfPatriotGames

Yes it's possible. I have not played much tournament chess but my USCF is higher than my online rating, probably for reasons already mentioned. There is more of an investment in over the board chess, whereas online chess is just for fun and it doesn't really matter if you win or lose.

#47 I like to keep my privacy. After all, I'm only an expert, who cares who I am. When I hit NM, you'll know. Until then, think what you may. I will say I've never seen someone lie about their rating and then create a backstory for it, but I guess you're more cynical (egotistical?) than I am.

My USCF rating is 300+ points higher than it is here

This may not be true, depending on your strengths. I just broke 2200, and my theory is not strong at all so I'm looking forward to being able to explore a bit more.

^I agree - I will be using those if/when I get the title. But it would sure be a lot more helpful to me right now than it would be afterwards!

The slower the time, the better I play, so I tend to do better at USCF 30 min. or more games than blitz, etc. here.

True for everyone, unless your a computer.

Some people improve at chess, but don't play much OTB - so their OTB rating may be irrelevant. The 1700 may actually be worth 1950.

Some other people are very proud of their past accomplishments, but as they stopped playing competitively they get rusty - and an 2100 may actually be worth only 1948 in practice...

Keyboard heroism never gets old, though.

not me, at least. I play generally 2 regular rated tournaments a month, 6 regular and quick. I've been over 2000 for nearly a year, and I've play more than enough tournaments to prove that I am not any less than an expert.

Hahaha... expert... lol...

I'm worse at OTB, because i'm used to see the pieces in 2D, so it's harder for me to see patterns

That difference will wither away if you keep playing OTB games.

I can't get as focused online as I can OTB. It feels much lower pressure and more of a computer game. I think that most players play better OTB.

Having said that, that doesn't mean a higher grade. Online ratings are greatly inflated.
