Is Magnus Carlsen still playing creatively or is he playing the same ol' moves?
Magnus doesn't appear as creative as he was several years ago because a) he's older, less inclined to the attacking play he was once so fond of, and, b) he's #1 in the world, meaning that his competition is much tougher than it was when he was 2400-2600s. Elite players are far less forgiving of speculative novelties than normal masters. Not only that, but I think studying endless opening variations bores Carlsen. Why else would he play something like the Trompowsky in a world championship match? He's content now with an equal position out of the opening, inducing a mistake - no matter how slight - so as to capitalize on that mistake and grind down his opponent slowly. It's basic positional chess at its finest: acquire a small positional advantage and work to widen the margin of your advantage.

Crazy but you're absolutely correct.
Just curious if magnus carlsen is a genius why isn't he churning out new moves the world has never seen before?
It just seems like he beats people because he can hold many positions in his mind , positions that have been played before. I've gone through thousands of his games and they all look identical and for some reason always beat his opponents.
