Is MVL on a decline? :(

He could be playing too much fast time controls online, so bullet and blitz. This might have an effect on the way he approaches classical games.

Both parts of his candidates performance were solid. I think he may just be drained.
yeah kind of like magnus, pretty much there a few players that can withstand it cause they are so used to playing online like hikaru
he is failing

well thats what i mean about lately and the same has happened to all the good Super GM's, its mostly the pandemic which really has affected their performance along with others like us
true

Well he is 31 years old this year so it was bound to happen eventually. Most players peak in early to mid-30s. Carlsen seems to still be playing fantastic chess but he is a rare and special talent.

MVL since the Candidates restarted has been playing pretty poorly.
and speaking of Radjabov, did anyone watch the broadcast? Yasser pretty much called him out for all the quick draws. Maurice Ashley was like"damn man, we can't take you anywhere" lol
It was pretty shocking. Definitely wasn't supposed to say that out loud.lol

And poor Radjabov cannot win a game in Romania!
Why do we feel bad for Radjabov? He's the laziest elite player and when he's called out on it instead of being in anyway apologetic or just silent about his short draws he brags about them.
I don't hate the guy but if his results means he stops getting invited to elite tournaments it would be better for chess.

well tbh thats kind of the whole reason we felt bad for him at all, he was one of the best players in his time and still is but he is getting old and he knows that if he cant win he wont be invited anymore which sucks but at the same time he still could win money from banter blitz which may help him a little
But he isn't trying. I can understand liking a defensive player (I am quite a defensive one myself and have supported a bunch in my time) and I can understand the pain of seeing a player you like struggle where the results just aren't coming.
But he's not struggling against impossible odds ,he's just coasting along happy to take fast GM draws. How can people care for someone who cares so little?
MVL was not even qualified for Candidates: he got the spot because Radjabov declined to participate for fear of COVID. MVL was doing great in the first half of Candidates, but losing the game to Caruana in the second half may have wrecked him: he should have kept the draw in the 7 men endgame.

But he didn't end the tournament badly. He even won in the last round.

MVL unexpectedly got a spot in candidates, did great in the first half of candidates with outlook on a possible match for the world championship, then he defended magnificently against Caruana, but stupidly lost in a basic endgame, shattering his dreams. The last round did not matter any more. Nepo lost the last round, but won the tournament and the right to challenge Carlsen.

I know what events happened. What I am saying is that his second half of the candidates wasn't bad like his current results it was just less good compared to Nepo's That doesn't explain his awfull results where he is near the bottom of lower level tournaments.

Radjabov recently (I think ~2 years ago) got married to the daughter of an billionaire executive owning one of the major energy infrastructure companies in Azerbaijan. I think apart from being unmotivated, he has been lacking focus on chess for a long time.

He won in the champions chess tour not too long ago and literally cried when he won. I don't think he's washed up or unmotivated, he just plays a lot of quick draws.

every person has bad periods. Magnus has had it in the last couple years as well.
It's just much more pronounced at the highest levels because if a top player is having a rough time all the other players take full advantage of it in the most efficient way possible, and they are very consistent in doing so.
So as casuals we perceive this as a greater problem than it actually is.
