Is my jump in rating unprecedented?

Time for a consensus,

First of all I want to thank everybody for the overwhelming support. It was hard for me to realize or fathom the magnitude of my achievements until I reached out to the chess.com community.

In summary, I couldn't have been more correct in my original thesis. This sort of rating increase is not only something to be admired, but also something to be bewildered by. The aggregate response of this forum is one of disbelief. Obviously such a rating increase has never been seen before on chess.com before and therefore I feel like I need to address some skepticism. The anomaly of this situation would have some people point their finger and accuse me of using a computer engine. But I assure you, I achieved my rating boost without any use of aids or engines.

I hope this inspires you all. You do not need engines, or aids to improve your chess game. What you need is desire, effort, and passion. Do not be impressed, I am just a man, an ordinary chess player who had a goal, and the belief in his ability to achieve it. If I can do it, with enough time and commitment possibly you could all achieve such incredible rating increases as well.

Thank you all once again.

All correct except for the above-quoted dangling preposition.

9.5 out of 10.

@Pashak1989, The thread is summarized. There is no need for further comments. Have a nice day.

Are you sure you're not thinking about sex?

... I always do.

I thought this sentence was a bit clumsy "Obviously such a rating increase has never been seen before on chess.com before"

But I liked the inspirational "I am just a man" paragraph. I'd have probably tried to work "one man who dared to dream" in there somewhere but that's just quibbling about the details

Sorry for the mistake. You see, I'm a very busy man. I did not have time to proof read my consensus this time.

We are all worried that since you have started this thread, your rating has gone down! I think you should consider crowdfunding so that you can pursue this full-time.

This whole thread was mislabelled. It should have said: Look at my accomplishment. The rating jump isn't impressive enough to write home about. If it was 1500 to 1800, that would have been enough to impress me though.

Manoel

Dear Vladimir, I read some of your thread and decided it was time to put you back on earth. On the 5th of December, I had a similar rating to yours – I was rated 785 in Blitz. Today I am at 1000. Of course, you could argue that with 1075, you had 75 points more than me. But if you look at my games in Blitz, you'll notice that in the last few days I jumped from 914 to 1000. You'll  also notice that you've been playing more games than me – and therefore achieved your current rating sooner than me – and that's why in my eyes I wouldn't consider your rating jump something special, as I don't consider mine special either – which is very similar to yours.

I don't know when you started to play Chess, but for me it was this summer – I didn't even know the rules before. I started to play regularly in October last year.

Most of the games I play, I don't even think. The first thing I do when I wake up is play some chess, with my eyes still half-closed and my brain not even active yet – and I often lose. I play it for fun. But if I concentrate, I often win. In that case, however, I would have to play not when I am in the mood to play, but when my brain is the most active and when the best conditions for concentration can be fulfilled, resulting in the game not being as much fun because I would probably be playing it at times when I wouldn't want to play it.

You sound more like you have been missing attention from your mother and have developed some issues with your ego. Since we have about the same rating, I suggest we play some matches. I will play you only when I'm concentrated, and promise to do my best. And I'll make sure you see your rating go down like it is chased in a high speed pursuit. wink.png

Vladimir - I make it that you will be rated about 2600 by the end of this year. Easily a GM. A realistic target would be to become World Champion some time in 2018.

I base my assumption on the following anecdote:

I was walking past the desk of a colleague of mine who seemed to be working uncharacteristically hard. I asked him what he was working on. "Well" he said "my wife just rang to say that our newborn son has put on 2 pounds in the last week. I just worked out that at that rate of growth he will weigh more than me by the time he is 3 months old."

I haven't seen that colleague for about thirty years, but I have no doubt that his son is by now the largest object in the known Universe. Good luck with your career in chess. If that doesn't work out you could try a career in shameless self-promotion. If you try the latter you should move to the US where, apparently, you wouldn't have to pay any US taxes.

Yes, I think an argument could successfully be made for that.

Ummm, actually, your rating rise is nothing out of the ordinary.

The difference between 800 and 1100 is the difference between a noob that throws pieces up in the air and a noob that is more consistent and no longer does that sort of thing.

The difference between 2500 and 2700 is massive.

This is completely true - it may even be understated.  most 2500 GM's can't even dream of reaching 2700.  To go from 800 to 1100 for a beginner in a short time is extremely common

I emailed a Ph.D. in Mathematics to verify, but at least on the face of things, it does seem that 1075 is greater than 1000 by EXACTLY 75!

IpswichMatt

Thanks Jimmy. I thought that was probably the case but it's nice to have independant confirmation.

Recently I was feeling curious (pedantic) so I googled the rule regarding hanging prepositions. There isn't one. Turns out it's just "informal" to end a sentence with a preposition.

Whew!... Glad we cleared that up. I end sentences in a preposition all the time and always felt guilty about it!

Very interesting. But trust me I can see the sarcasm in your comment. You may just be jealous of my extraordinary improvement. But at this rate, I'll be a GM in no time. Should be able to achieve an NM title within in months at this pace.

Here's my unbiased and purely objective analysis of your performance:

You start with a default blitz rating of 1200, as we all do. By Dec. 5, it had dropped to 782, a 418 point decrease. I'm not sure over what time period you managed to lose that many points, but I would suggest you look into whether that accomplishment is also unprecedented.

But you weren't discouraged. You're a fighter. Bravely you clawed your way back up to 1075, only 125 points away from the default 1200! I just checked your current blitz rating, It has dropped to 1005. Don't worry, setbacks happen. Don't give up! NM or GM may or may not be in your future, but I have no doubt that with a lot of work and persistence, in a few years you'll be able to reach (or even slightly exceed) the, for you, ever elusive default rating of 1200.

Recently, I  have experienced an incredible jump in my blitz rating.

I was rated 782 on December 5th, and today I am rated 1075. That is a rating increase of 293 points.

I was so impressed with this achievement…

Nice improvement!

But you would be wise not to be “so impressed” with your progress and you shouldn’t consider it “an incredible jump” when you obviously have nothing to compare against.

The higher your rating gets, the more difficult it is to change your rating by the same amount. Note that 1075 –especially in online chess- still indicates a player who doesn’t understand the game very well.

Going from 782 to 1075 is not the same leap as in going in OTB ratings from 1075 to 1200.

To all those who answered this threat in earnest without any discernible sarcasm: You realize this guy is just a troll, trying to get a rise out of you all, right? He knows he's a weak player and that there is nothing remotely impressive about his "achievement". And it's also likely that he has long realized that he won't ever get much stronger. Out of frustration, he has turned into a pathetic troll.
