Playing bots occasionally can be beneficial, but I don’t particularly like playing bots. The lower rating bots sometimes play comically deep opening theory if you do and then they just collapse with a non-human blunder. The problem with the higher rating bots (especially 1800+) is that they play good moves that aren’t really consistent with a plan the way that a human would.

The main problem I have with bots is precisely this “non-human” way of playing. Human players will form plans and try to continue those plans. Maybe some human players won’t follow-through with their plans (typically some lower rated players reacting to opponent threats first) and maybe some human players pick flawed plans (especially common around 1600-2000 level), but they play consistent moves for that plan which can really test you. Computers at the higher levels will play a move consistent with Plan A and then next move play a move more aligned with a Plan B and somehow “get away with it.” The reason is because a bot can’t “think” like a human and so it calculates extremely deep and can play a move with a different plan, but still make it work because it didn’t hurt their position too much. It’s still strong, but it’s annoying to play against because I want to play my plan against their plan; not inconsistent moves which happen to be strong through calculation.

Similarly, you need to practice exploiting human mistakes and you’ll only get these by playing other human players. I’m not saying to never play bots, but I’m recommend playing human players the majority of the time if you have that option.
