is scandinavian a good defence

Thank you all guys for the analysis.

Last I checked, if we didn't have a title next to our names ... then we're all noobs :)

Because it is a BL's opening. Like 1...Nf6 is called KID and 1.Nf3 KIA.

But the other name is more descriptive, it is also known as "center counter game".

No, the queen is brought out too early and white gains time by playing 3.Nc3.  It's playable, just unsatisfactory.

This is why i like 2...Nf6

Cynicalism

How most scandinavian games play out. 2...Nf6 is a more playable, equal move for black though. In every instance black sacrifices tempo for a more balanced (and usually open) center.

It's the one queen-out-early opening that is not foolish. It's not so easy to defeat played well by Black, in my experiance.

Would you consider the Qxd5 line better than the Nf6?

Its not a matter of better, its personal preference.

White loses time playing exd5. We're even.

The most testing move is 2...Qxd5, but 2...Nf6 is playable.

I hate that even GMs have been known to say it loses a tempo for black... but notice white is losing a tempo first with the move 2.exd. After 2...Qxd 3.Nc3 Qa5 development is equal with white to move, just as it was before the game began.

Best in-depth analysis I've seen in quite a while. Reb and pfren, you could learn a lot from these guys.

Gotta love the mushroom mentality.  Stay in the dark, and get fed a lot of BS.

Yeah there is actually tempo lost, but much later in the line after black retreats the queen after playing c6.

Ah, I guess you're right.

I don't know how it's generally regarded. It seems to me black gets equality (or close to it) without much trouble, but for this accepts a fairly passive position.

I'd guess a decent opening choice for all but the most elite players.

odisea777

not good against a good player; black loses a tempo with queen; strong players will generally take advantage

but can work against not good players (like me)

Scottrf

Lets be honest, all of us can afford to give up a tempo to reach a position we are comfortable in.

odisea777

yeah if you gain something in exchange for the tempo; but I don't like bringing my queen out early like that. good players always make me pay

I always reference Anands loss to Kasparov in the 1995 WCC. At its core the Scandinavian simply gives white an early tempo.

In that game, neither side knew too much how to play that opening.

Actually Anand had the advantage from the opening. Anand played Black.

Neit'er?

I play Scandinavian with Nf6.
