Is the pawn moving forward only?

I played with a player who moved the pawn right. Is this legal?
It always needs to move forward, it can capture diagonally, which means moving to the right/left and one step forward. Pawns cant move back because Russian traitors were shot during WW2 for retreating.
Pawns are tricky. They move forward but can't capture like they move. Many other special rules for them; best to check out a youtube video.
