Is there such thing as "luck" in chess?

I may have been muted 7 times and at least four were due to software errors. For instance, a typo that the software picks up as a naughty word. The reason I have this Diamond membership was as a present for making a detailed suggestion, regarding how the software might be improved, to prevent it happening, because it happens a lot.

The other three times would probably be due to over-reacting to this person. He is not exactly what people think of as honest, but is someone who habitually accuses others of his own misdemeanors. He has been muted on numerous occasions. His ultimate projection is, of course, that all others are projecting and not him. It isn't really possible to win with him because he always denies everything and makes unfounded counter-accusations. Really it's all down to whom people believe. Since he's easily the least popular person on the entire site, that speaks for itself, with most people.

He's clearly on his way to closing this thread down, single-handedly.

I have never been muted except accidently by the software, and your mutings were not caused by me.  They are your own responsibility.  Funny how life works.

As for your assertion, that's based on your own bias...there have been plenty of "who's the biggest/most famous troll on the site?" and "who's the most unpopular poster?" threads over the years on the site.  I have never even been mentioned, except by a troll account that later was banned.  Trolls don't like me, so that's not a big surprise.  They get all bent out of shape given a taste of their own medicine (sans the actionable parts).  Case in point.

The reason you think I am the most hated poster on the site is simple...you think I am every account you don't like wink.png.

P.S. I have also been gifted a year's membership myself by staff...is that supposed to mean something?

Oh means that all not leftleaning accounts would be trolls since they were muted sometime ago

Having an easy life?

If your post has some meaning embedded in it, you'll have to coax it out into the open.

To answer your question, though, yes, I am having an easy life.

Because no thinking involved.

No, because I think just fine and thus retired early, as opposed to, I dunno, marrying my way to financial security.

This thread has become a contest over yellow liquid and the tools used to send it.

Somebody has to do it, or everyone just gets that same liquid indiscriminately sprinkled around on them anyway wink.png.  Housebreaking is not an easy task with recalcitrant subjects.

SpaceVoidSuperEvil

Interesting comments, but I see most are not about luck anymore.

This is getting off topic.

lfPatriotGames

Since it's already been proven there is at least some luck in chess, and nobody wants to take it from there, it's probably time for the topic to close.

“getting”

That’s the understatement of the year.

At least @CooloutAC more or less stayed on topic even when he was verbally abusive.

Well, I quit chess then.

And who might this "historical revisionist" be?

There were tons of pages before but Mr. C’s comments got deleted.

There are those who have failed to spot that are argument is won, done and dusted. One person in particular: probably the World's greatest histerical revisionist.

So what.

In a discussion about the size of the earth, there will be some people who insist it's flat, rather than a sphereish shape. So what. All they have is their belief. You are never going to change that. I think it makes more sense to just move on rather than have the whole conversation dragged down by the few who just want to drag for drags sake.

We can't measure luck but because of what it is and the nature of chess (and people) we know it's present in chess. I don't think flat earthers deserve much consideration, and tbh it diminishes the credibility of anyone who seriously engages with them. I understand having a conversation, but unless something new comes up I don't see the point in engaging with people who just want attention.

At least talk about rhubarb, or something interesting.

Tbh though, you have contributed. You reignited it by your very own self.

I have experience with yellow liquid and electric fences. One of those things Boy Scouts do when they are not starting fires.

The site will probably turn these images sideways. This is how I make rhubarb gin. Then store capped for three to four weeks, shaking every few days. Then remove the rhubarb and start making martinis with blackberries, strawberries, raspberries or whatever appropriate fruit you have in your garden. This summer, I’m enjoying fresh squeezed blackberry juice.

Well I may have something new.

There is this story from Moscow about a tournament where a robot broke the finger of a child playing chess. This could go two different ways. Some might say that we finally have evidence of physical harm in a chess game, therefore chess is a sport.

But it could also be bad luck. Now the child is injured and can't keep playing. Robots aren't necessary to play chess, but they do play it. I don't know if the child forfeits or the robot forfeits for acting in a violent manner toward the child. But it's interesting at least. A Russian grandmaster, Karjakin, said "This has never happened before".

Which is kinda how luck can sometimes work.

Almost everyone cares. About rhubarb at least.

DarkKnightAttack

I consider myself lucky if I win a technically lost game but I don't consider them lucky, if they win vs me lol.
