I can just imagine the campaign slogan of our first Environmentalist president; "If you're not a vegetarian like us, then you're a thoughtless, unempathetic jackass and a waste of food."Laughing

I agree that all our food should be derived from plants. For example, a nice steak that is derived from a cow's consumption of plants.

oinquarki

Maybe one day we won't even need to eat plants!; We can just have robotic implants that directly convert solar energy into necessary nutrients. That way no free, living beings who feel pain will be harmed or imprisoned at all.

HessianWarrior

Give me a break. Vegatables are great with a hunk of Meat. If we were meant to eat only vegatables and grass we would have teeth like a cow or a horse. We as humans have teeth for both.

What is wrong with you?, ivan!

All that fatty meat would taste horrible without any spice!

Pour some Sriracha over that!

Showing a picture of a bloodied seal is not funny. It's really not.

oinquarki

It looks like Sriracha to me.

Who would use that much Tabasco?

We first must identify pain.  It is a reponse to a present or impending harmful stimulus.  Almost all organisms feel a type of pain.

Now plants are different in that they are hormone driven when a harmful stimulus is received, rather than the electrical responses in animals.

It worked didn't it?  Welcome back trysts Laughing

The best diet is 100% raw vegan organic, 70% of the time.

ivandh

Texans use tabasco sauce like it's ketchup.

HessianWarrior

The best diet is eat whatever the hell you want, you're going to die someday.

oinquarki

The best diet is to do exactly what the latest hipster trend tells you; that way, even though you feel like crap and spend a ton of money, at least you'll always be accepted by a certain group of people, and friendship is worth much more than your money or your well-being.

No. Pain is an immeasurable, subjective feeling. No one can know that you are feeling pain, or how much pain you feel. Through empathy, we can try to be sensitive to other's pain. In animals, we may become sensitive to their pain by judging expressions from the animal. We can not judge pain in any organism. The organism must have an affinity with us, for us to be able to "read" their expressions.

Exactly why eating whatever the hell you want makes more sense than forking over a bunch of dough and months of tasteless drivel shoved in your mouth.

oinquarki

Months? Clearly you lack commitment, attention span, and strength of character; It's a lifelong endeavor, not a "months" thing.

Teeth are God's way of giving us free will; If we were only capable of eating either meat or grass, we wouldn't be truly free. However, just because we are given the ability to eat meat, doesn't mean we aren't going to hell for it.

dannyhume

Yeah, I wasn't always 100% vegan raw organic 70% of the time.  Now I am...just for the last few months though.

If you have a problem with treatment with animals, why not try organic meats then?

I agree that the factory style conditions are pretty awful for the animals.  In addition, the nutrients are diminished considerably because of the hormones in the animals.  Corn is not good feed for a cow.  It makes them very large, but it also is terrible for their health, and the quality of meat is much lower.

Organic meats are small farmers who raise cows on grass and natural free range.  These meats are considerably better in nutritional value and they do not contain hormones.  The treatment of these animals is also very good.

Organic farmers struggle making money against the factory farm system, and the FDA has gone out of its way to help big business.  So why not support them by buying organic?
