Maybe the sac wasn't completely sound :) (maybe 23...Bxf6)? but I also like Bg5 for the same reasons you did.
I think he had the right idea with b6, c5 (although before that his opening was a bit off like you said) but instead maybe bxc5 is better, keeps pressure on e5 and threatens to kick the bishop off.
I also like g4 kingside attacks vs a pirc type setup. I go for the Be3 Qd2 0-0-0 g4 stuff.

If you look through my history you'll notice a tendency of me posting an interesting game once in while. Well it's been a while since most of my live chess has been 1/0 time controls which doesn't make well for learning or sharing. But here's a 3/0 time controls game that had a nice attack because of black's weak opening.
