Keep chess fair

I believe thar chess.com should give players the option of ending a game with no result if his opponent chooses to use the vacation vacation option.

And if the game is in a tournament, ended with no result, how do you figure placement and advancement?  I use vacation time, (its a busy life and much takes priority over chess) my opponent(s) decide to "no result" the game(s).  So in a 7 player section I now have 4 games.  Even if I win all 4 I cannot advance as 4 points is insufficient.  I have, in effect, forfeited 2 games because I used a valid (standard even, all sites have it) feature of Chess.com-vacation.  My rating is unaffected, and who cares about that anyway, but I have lost the section.  In effect I am penallized because I gave Chess.com money.  An error I would be quick to remedy.

1) If we were talking about a difference in clock time in real-time chess I could see the issue.  It's not as a non-supporting member gets a half-hour while a supporting member gets an hour.  Vacation time is a convenience, not a gamebreaker.

2) Hotflow, you come across as quite an ass.

edit: 3) While I'm all for suggesting improvements on anything, I know that I would be hard pressed to find a more comprehensive site that offers as many features for non-paying members as this site.

Heh, at least you're a good sport about it.

Extra vacation time for those who pay for it is patently unfair and makes playing chess at all completley pointless. No one can enjoy the game until all inequalities are removed. Sadly this vacation time issue points to the systemic unfairness built into chess everywhere. In OTB tournaments there are innumerable ways in which rich players are advantaged over poor players. We must halt all such tournaments. Just think of the disgusting favouritism shown to rich players who choose to use their wealth to stay at hotels closer to the tournament and so have the advantage of extra time to sleep in. And that's not even the worst of it! Some players are so wealthy that they buy more chess books, which help them improve and get yet another advantage over their poor counterparts who have to make do with fewer study materials. This cannot be allowed to continue.

I propose the banning of all games that are not completely fair in the interests of keeping our sport a legetimate and honorable activity. From now on, only players who have studied equally hard, who have eaten the same foods, who have slept the same amounts and who have the same vacation time allowances can play each other. Even if the disadvantaged player would choose to play the advantaged player (as they shamefully do now), this must be immediately outlawed.

I'll be petitioning FIDE later today, after I'm done pushing the boundaries of insanity on this forum.

ROTFL!!!! PML!!!! Classic Post!

The rich are able to buy various premium memberships with various amounts of extra 'vacation time'. In effect, they can stand up and shout "stop the clock" whenever they feel like it while their poor opponent doesn't have the same luxury.

The two players have agreed to the same time-controls but surely this should include stop-the-clock time?"

The rich? Mate I'm on unemployment benefits and I can still scrape together the $33.50 (or thereabouts Australian Dollars) cash required to purchase a gold membership! (trying to pay through paypal)

I believe it is fair. I'm paying my money for an increase in service.  If that means my games where I cant get to the computer in time are put onto vacation time so be it.

Its no different to say - A sporting or live show.   The Better the seats the better the service the higher the cost.  If you want to be way up high in the nose bleeds you'll pay a cheap price - in this case nothing.  If you want something better you pay more.  If you want a corporate box with all the trimmings you pay the max.

Were all watching the same show - a game of chess.

Life isnt fair folks and neither is chess !  Get over it !  I find it a bit hard to believe that there are those who claim they cannot afford to be a premium member here, are you really THAT poor ?!  I mean, do a few odd jobs and you make enough money to be a premium member here. How can you afford a computer ? The internet access ? There is really something wrong with this picture, am I the only one to see that ?

You're not wrong. I think many people choose not to pay and then find fancy ways of dressing it up.

If odd jobs aren't enough to pay for it, do some even ones.

Some people, like myself, have their electricity turned off a couple times a year. That is how tight money can be for those bright people who think they know how to spend other people's money.

Well the point wasn't really can you avoid it or work around it.  The point is: is it unfair?

Player A: Doesn't have to play to the clock.

Player B: Does have to play to the clock.

The difference is as basic as that.

Fair enough except you forgot to mention:

Player A: pays so

Player B: can play here.

Everything is perfectly fair and legit.

If you have problems with that, just don't accept challenges from premium members. Then you are guaranteed to be on equal footing.

I have never found time to be an issue here. The only thing I don't like is when a 1300 outplays me in the opening because of database =/

This is the BIGGEST problem they have here.  The database of moves.  I guy I played a lot went from 1000 to 1600.  I was (before my funds ran out - I doubt I will be able to renew my diamond membership) flabbergasted that he used to the database for every move.

I asked him if he learned to play chess that way.  He responded no, but he played better.  Huh?  I have an awful rating for various reasons:

1) I play touch move -- I want to play in an OTB tournament someday and you cannot check your move and then say "OK".

2) I learn on my own - I do not check with the database to see what is the best move

3) I am disabled with various ailments - sometimes I play while on (legal) narcotics for the pain.  Makes you foggy.  You can almost tell how I am feeling by my rating.

One point to consider.  Other websites have similar databases for free.  If you do not want to pay for it, it is out there on the internet.

I get beat often by people I know are not making moves on their own.  But that only helps the opening.  I have learned to play simple openings.  They once the database is of no use, game on.

I formed a group "Friends and Chess Players".   It is a small group of friendly people.   We play small tournaments all the time.  Always one or two day time control and NO VACATION.  Do players time out?  Of course.

But they knew when they signed up.  With iPhone and Smartphone apps and public computers, I find it difficult that you cannot find a way to make one move in 4 games a day.  4 moves a day.

But I have digressed.

Inequalities will always exist. Everyone brings different experiences when they step to a game. Some people have private lessons. Some people have vacation time.

But you can overcome these inequalities with hard work and patience. Cultivate your skill, and you'll find you can overcome the more insignificant inequalities.
