Hey guys, if you have seen any videos from the chesswebsite.com, do you know who is Kevin, the guys who makes all the chess videos? What is his full name and all that.

jexrkes

Kevin Butler it seems - has a chess.com nickname "thechesswebsite":

Yea i like him, need to watch more of his videos. I love the chess board/pieces, if it is possible somehow to use same settings as his board on his videos... i don't know how..

Ziryab

I've watched enough of his videos to know that he's too weak as a player to offer any value to me.

so you resurrected a 3 years old dead thread to tell this? grin.png

I was searching the web for information after watching another horrid video. It's hard to find information. This thread was one of the top hits in my search. It's age is irrelevant.

He has a slick website and lost of videos, but listening to his analysis, I'd say his OTB rating, if he has one, cannot be over 1500.

"Its age is irrelevant."

I complain at restaurants if the wine they serve is too old. Gotta be fresh off the vine, baby!

jurassicmark

Yeah, that Pythagorean theorem is total garbage.

I've heard people list him as 1900. However, I'm 1900 and I think that's unlikely. But 1700 might be possible, and there are some really inflated areas so you never know.

The game he played which was analyzed by Will Stewart wasn't so bad.

what about someone much lower.  say us 1200-1500 guys?

is someone like this simply too unskilled to be able to offer solid advice (ex. BYP)-- or does his vids offer a certain amount of instructive content; until you get stronger and begin to see what this guy doesn't...

curious, cause it seems that a person ELO score isn't always a good gauge on how instructive that person might be...

SilentKnighte5

The only Kevin Butler from TX has a provisional rating of 100.  100.  Let that sink in for a minute.

I thought the videos were well done, although I never really took them for anything more than videos directed towards beginners. I definitely learned from them when I started watching chess on YouTube and began reading books and stuff.

Good questions and good points.

I started teaching a lot of children when I was under 1500. But, I focused on elementary endgames, general opening principles, and tactical problems. I also checked everything with chess engines.

Kevin Butler's website and chess videos are heavily publicized and claim to offer comprehensive instruction. Like BYP, he has produced expectations that seem well beyond his ability to meet.

SmyslovFan

BYP?

Carla-Magnusson

They are introductory videos. I think they are very good. Why do you find it necessary to be so mean?

Pilchuck

BYP == Backyard Professor. His videos wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't so completely clueless as to his lack of actual talent and ability. He started out with the idea that he could attain a master rating just by reading books. His videos attempt to teach others using Jeremy Silman's books, but he doesn't have more than a beginner's grasp of the game and so fails rather badly. He tried playing tournaments in Idaho but gave up after only two or three. He attained a rating of just under 800, then gave up.

He's funny and entertaining in a doofus kind of way, but he just has no idea what he's talking about.

As far as this Kevin person goes, I remember watching a couple of his videos but remember very little of the content. It didn't seem especially relevant or helpful. There's a guy named Jerry who has a channel called chessnetwork, and he's active on lichess and chess.com. He's a master, and his videos are instructive and entertaining; good for all skill levels, in my opinion.

thegreat_patzer

so thats the point.   you want to learn from a person that is actually seeing and understanding what is going on.

I don't view criticism like this as mean.   if you seek to educate chessplayers, espacially for profit,  It is reasonable for strong players to look over your weaknesses and share those with prospective students.

lofina_eidel_ismail

I know the title of this thread is on Kevin, but I like Jerry(ChessNetwork)

very cute videos

just saying😊

Carla-Magnusson

Ok, thanks for the tip Lofina Laughing

I think Kevin has a nice voice and explains things well.

And they are free vids.

It's not mean. When a person heavily advertises a website and videos, criticism is to be expected. Searching for information about "Kevin" led to this thread. I'm not the only person curious about the qualifications of this chess teacher who seems at first to be quite good, but after watching a few videos begins to provoke doubts.
