Hi everyone! This is the second blog of a 5 blog series where you will be taught everything you need to get to 1000 elo! In this blog, you will learn about king safety.

https://www.chess.com/blog/JustNotYetGM/the-different-phases-of-a-chess-game-how-to-get-to-1000-part-1 (part 1 of the series)

Remember, the king is the most important chess piece. Nothing will make up with losing the game! So king safety is extremely important in every chess game. You will tremendously reduce the danger of getting checkmated if your king is safe and secure.

First, I suggest you to castle if you can, especially at lower levels like 100-600. But sometimes, castling isn't the best option:

In this position, black's king could potentially be a target. It might not be evident at first glance, but black's king has no good castling option. On the queen-side, black has a very weak pawn structure with 2 backward pawns (pawns that have been left behind by other pawns and that are weak). It could be a bad option to long castle, because the king could be subjected to an attack later on in the game. Some more experienced players could say that castling queen-side is not a bad idea, but we would need some experience to navigate this difficult position. And if black short-castles the pawn on h7 is an immediate target for white, who will expose the king by removing a pawn protecting it.

In this position, black's pawns are overextended and black's king will most likely be a target for white. I actually took advantage of that, eventually making black lose the right to castle, and with a king safe and sound, I went on to win the game. I have seen many players under 500 elo moving the "a" and "h" pawns by two squares in their games. If you do not have a solid idea behind these moves, I do not recommend playing them.

In this position, I see way too many players playing g5 with black, breaking the pin but destroying their pawn structure. Now it is a bad idea to castle king-side, and long castle is a bad idea because the king would be open too. if there is a position where one castling option is bad, make sure not to make your other castling option a liability as well. The position I just described will often appear and its not always a good move to break a pin like this.

Now, I will show multiple chess positions and ask a few questions. The answers will be at the bottom of the page.

  1. In the position above, is it a good idea for black to move his queen?

2. In the position above, on which side should white castle?

3. A much harder one. Who is winning in the position above and why?

Answers:

1. black should not move his queen because white will take the f6 knight, and once the black pawn takes back, black's king will be opened

2. White should castle queenside because black has a dangerous pawn attack on the kingside which could turn in a dangerous attack.

3. This is a much harder one. White is winning with the move bxh7 with forced checkmate for white.

This is all for today, I hope you have learned something and I will see you soon in the next blog of this series!

yeah well I am 1200 just underrated

it is literally so easy to get to 1000. just learn a opening and stop blunder pieces and learn basic tactics. that literally carries you to 1600

My rating we both know you ar way better than me and challenging me to a best of 15 challenge is futile as we both know you will win. If you want to prove I am a fraud, you should put me up against a 1200 and see who wins.

Also, whilst g5 might not be the best move, do you seriously think a 500 can navigate a position with a wide open king? I am trying to keep things simple. Now if you do not like my blog, feel free to leave.

i literally got to my level because of

  1. recognizing positions from ones ive seen before from other games (so i recognize plans and ideas
  2. studying and learning tactics
  3. improving intuition with puzzles
  4. learning challenging openings (not openings like the london)
  5. not hanging pieces

look at queens gambit GM games alltheway through and look at how they play the middlegame and see their common plans. also you can just search up ¨how to play the minority attack in the QGD¨ depending which variation you play
