Let's talk Notation...

I'm wondering if it's worth learning. Do I need to know each square? what benefits are there to learning it? Does it add anything to a level of play?

It primarily helps with reading games and being able to visualize them. Also, if you're going to play OTB rated chess, notation is required.

Will it make you play better in and of itself? No

What it will do is expand your insight into the game which could increase your enjoyment and appreciation.  Plus it's simple coordinates, not rocket science and learning notation takes about 5 seconds.

I agree that it won't help on it's own. But it will make learning easier and open up a way of communicating. I am not so good at it, but am practicing so that every time I read a line I don't have to go back and check the notation.

Also it should be said that there is a tool for this here: https://www.chess.com/vision

It takes many Sesame Street episodes.

I didn't mean that as an insult, but as a simple fact.

Simple question. Without technology, just pen and paper.

How do you record a game?

unless I'm playing online I don't. I was considering doing so, but I'm like is it worth doing? I know it's not hard to do, just wondered if it's any point to it. But I think I will.

Descriptive seems comical now.

Some older people prefer it.  I know a players who think in descriptive, then have to transliterate into algebraic, so I can see how it would be awkward for them.  Algebraic is definitely cleaner, but also more sterile.  Actually, I find a certain beauty in each the many different notations that have been used over time.

A player using algebraic notation, would gain a time advantage, against an opponent who uses descriptive notation
