Either it is time paid back to him because of the lagg he is experiencing or then the time settings are set to give you extra time on each move you make. Or then he just moves really fast. Any of those ought to explain it
Live Games
Thanks for the information, but when you play against a clock you expect that clock to be correct, I have played quick/play games with a clock and when there is 10 seconds left you play your advantage knowing full well your apponent cannot mate you within the time limit. You certainly do not expect after your every move more time added to allow your apponent to win, you would not have played certain moves, you know you can win, you have made those moves well within your own time limit and your apponents flag is about to fall, but not so, would I have made such moves, NO!

You shouldn't think of it as time paid back -- if there were video footage of the two of you you'd see that even though you've made your move and your opponent's clock has started counting down, on his screen he hasn't seen your move yet, once he sees the move and makes his own the server records how long he took after seeing the move to make his own and then adjusts his time.
If he had 10 seconds and then after 4 moves has only 8 seconds (even if on your screen his flag fell each time) he's actually making moves very quickly the second he sees them and the "extra time" isn't helping him. If not for this time stamp people with poor connections would watch their time disappear for no reason and it wouldn't be a fair game -- with time stamp each player is guaranteed their 10 minutes (or whatever) and no more, so actually it makes it very fair.
My only grip is if I want to play a 2 minute game but my opponent has a lot of lag, we both end up with more time to think about the game and it may turn into more of a 5 minute game. Also if I have a good connection but my opponent a poor one even if I think I'm keeping up with his pace, he may be moving instantly and I wont know it unless I check the timer.
Thanks again for the observations, but I am not convinced, I made my move, they made a move which put their clock back 2 seconds, so how can you maintain that a time lapse before my apponent sees my move, that cannot work. If there is a time lapse which I believe can happen then their move would take time to appear on my screen, not immediately I made mine! I believe I had over 3 minites left on my clock whilst my apponents showed 10 seconds and did so for a number of moves1
Thanks Schachgeek, sometime ago I did play someome who had learned to manipulate lag, every move they made their clock in fact went back, I actually beat him and the message he printed clearly showed he did not expect to be beaten on time!! By the way less of the OP, I do have grandchildren but i'm not that old "yet"!
What is the point of "live chess" for 10 minites when your apponent has ten seconds left, makes 6 moves and still has 8 seconds left, each move he makes he has more time!
