You can also try Craigslist. I thought my area was devoid of chess clubs, but after posting on Craigslist a person contacted me and introduced me to a club that meets every Monday.
I live in Frisco. I'm still a novice, and not yet interested in paying the fees to play in a USCF tourney, but thats about all I've been able to find around here. I found a few groups that met to play socially, but they seem to have disbanded.
Have you found any active groups around here?

Branam there are USCF affiliates (clubs) that will allow a guest to come in and play OTB games. These games are recreational and are not USCF rated. In San Francisco try: http://www.uschess.org/assets/msa_joomla/AffiliateSearch/clubresultsnew.php?st=CA&pg=1 Best of luck, let me know if I can be of any help.
Oh, you know, I thought that might've been the case, but didn't see any indication of it on the clubs' websites. I'll get in touch with them and find out. Thanks for the help, Ray!
Do you live in Frisco TX. or San Francisco. Because if you live in San Francisco, I would have to say; Don't call it Frisco.
Hey there. I am looking for a chess buddy in Dallas, Texas
I am over 50 and I have played chess for many years. In the last couple of years I have had a renewed interest and I am looking to enter some tournaments, just to see what it is like. I would describe myself as an intermediate player. Obviously I would like to improve my chess playing and I think the best way to do that is have someone to play and discuss chess with on a regular basis. I am looking for someone in Dallas who also wants to improve and have some fun playing.
Thanks
Try chess.com tournaments. Seems like you haven't played online yet.
