I like Sigma Chess. It's free, easy to use, and does pretty much anything I'd want a chess program to do. The website explains all the features: http://www.sigmachess.com/

I got Shredder a while ago but its expensive. Most chess studying I now do on the computer is with free database software called SCID (http://scid.sourceforge.net/) loaded with a free database (http://www.top-5000.nl/pgn.htm) with a free engine (Stockfish) loaded on it. I downloaded it after checking out a good video tutorial on SCID, available here: http://www.chessvideos.tv/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6461

Hope that helps!

I think "sigma chess" is good, easy and free.  Some one said that macs come with a chess program, but my new macbook pro doesn't have a native chess program that i'm aware of.  All of the free chess programs I've downloaded onto my ipad are pretty weak, but they're fun for a while.

You do know that Macs get viruses and spyware as well right?  There was a pretty nasty rootkit that came out last year which is still a problem.

Hey Con,

I've got to tell you, switched to macs and os X about 6 years ago.  Since then I've not had a single virus or any malware on my computer.  I've never run a single anti virus program and I've not done anything to safeguard against such things accept run native adblockers in my browsers.  All 7 of the computers in my family have have run flawlessly on the software side.  Hardware is a different issue.  We've had the usual assortment of issues with hard drives, bluetooth and logicboards and such but the OS has been rock solid.  I'm a bit less impressed with the hardware.  But that's just the way of the world

@polydiatonic  I run windows without any antivirus, and I do nothing to safeguard my pc, and I've never had any problems with virus, however I don't think my pc is virus-free. Since you don't have any anti-virus software your mac may be full of viruses and you don't know.

@stwils  I have a imac and a pc, however almost every software I find on the net is only for windows, in particular most of games are only for windows, so I use the mac ONLY to surf on the net and to watch videos, so if you use your computer only to do this and work-like things then mac osx is the OS for you.

If you want acess to a great variety of softwares I would strongly recommend you to use windows, as the mac hardware is among the best, you could just install windows on it.

I understand your point.  However I do have various benchmarking programs that I use to see how my system is running and all is green without any compromised systems.  It's true that there may well be viruses on my computer but if they are there they're not DOING anything, and that's really the point, isn't it?

I think Exachess is good as a chess database for Macs. I read something here about a new version coming out in the near future. I bought it recently am happy based on the limited use to which I have managed to put it so far.

I have Shredder for iphone, and one day might splash out on the programme for my Mac. The iphone version is quite good if you have an one and want to try it out at low cost (the app is better than the chess.com one! - though that is fab when it works).
