yeah. I almost take it as an insult that some how the game has to be dumbed down for Americans to play it. write this off as a troll thread.

Think about it - 8 billion people live in China and can you name a single Chinese chess player? Of course you can't they all play Go over there. It's a cultural thing I think.
I'll make it simple (hopefully) for you: Yifan Hou and Jun Xie

That's funny... and complex.
Chess is is great game with a long history but like football it can never be considered truly global until it has conquered the most wealthy country in the world.
I'm sorry, but football is one of the most popular - if not the most popular - sport in America.
Did you see how many watched the Super Bowl???
Talking about pieces with cowboy hats. I have a game tucked away with "Cowboys and Indians". An old Waddington's game "The Battle Of The Little Big Horn". There are something like twelve Indians: six on foot, three on horses with tomahawks and three chiefs with rifles. The seventh cavalary consists of nine: Custer, two officers and six foot soldiers. Anyone else got this game ?
Nice troll, congratulations on the Chinese population count, that was a particular fine touch.
...Also I'm posting this from Mcdonalds right now while eating a Big Mac because Hurrr Durrrr I'm a fat Merrhican.
I can't name any Xiangqi players, but I can barely remember any Chess players' names. I'm just terrible with names.
I recently ate at a Chinese restaurant, and the owner asked if I played chess after noticing my knight keychain. He said he plays; I foolishly finished his sentence with, "oh, Chinese chess?" No, chess chess. He may have thought I said Chinese checkers.
It would be a more popular sport if they'd replace the whole cross-dressing thing with pawns and queens, and just call it what it is, a touchdown.
EDit: Edited for video edivence

An engineers job is not done when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to bill to the client.
i have a friend from america at uni. he is learning quite fast and i am helping him. it took him only a few hours to learn how the pieces move
I love the chess with friends facebook app! There was too many pieces on the board for regular chess and I ain't got no time for that. I was able to get in three games before the Oscars :):):)

What I would propose is a similar approach to that which worked so well to break the game in the good old U S of A. To recap from Pretzler's seminal work The American game:
"The game was radically simplified here to cater for the domestic American market. The King and Queen were removed ("What's with this Limey Monarchist baloney?" source: Robin Fischer GM) and replaced with a single all powerful President which could pretty much do what it wanted. The other pieces were all replaced by Cowboys with big hats and bigger guns. Time control was strictly limited to ensure games did not out-last the attention span of the indigenous population. The game can now easily be completed in its entirety during the advertisement break in The Simpsons over a Bic Mac supper..."
These small alterations had units literally flying off the shelves and General Electric's Chess TM was the biggest grossing game ever in that short period which constitutes American history.
I'm sure some small changes could be successfully made for the Chinese market any ideas Chess.com?
