Usually I respind with a "hi", but sometimes I forget and just focus on the game.
I don't think it's downright rude to not respond to a "hello". This is a chess site, not a chat site.

Disagree with ya : ^ )
I'll speak if spoken to... but otherwise I'm there to play chess and so is my opponent, silence may as well be mutual respect. :)
I don't think empty "hi" means anything, so I omit it. Still, I always answer if somebody says it. I also reply to any comments - interesting about the game and rude too, accordingly.

It is called CHESS.com not chat.com
Well sometimes I like to play using the "large" board and the chat screen isn't even viewable :p (as a side note I think full screen live chess should be implemented! for those wih smaller monitors. not to mention it would prevent the temptation of wandering off to another site in the middle of a game)
Other than that, I know where you're coming from but as was said I think many people don't speak English or don't even notice.
All my socializing takes place after the game, pretty much as in real life otb though a handshake is traditional for serious games.
I have no interest in chatting, as my finger notes on another site say explicitly, before or during the game. After the game I am usually happy to talk about it.
I don't think this makes me rude. People who want me to do differently seem to have a different agenda than I do. Have fun I guess but I am going to be concentrating on the game.
If Live becomes stabile here then maybe you'll have the chance to throw a tantrum because I'm not socializing properly.
when playing live it depends on my mood on wheter or not ill chat, if i chat i do it over in the chat room and usually not with my opponents. i say hi and gg as virtual handshakes. i would always shake hands with my opponent before and after a game in OTB play, so i have to simulate that here on the net. in online games i usually ask about someones country if i dont know anything about it, and if they engage in conversation ill let it flow naturally. but im not offended by people who dont greet, or disable thier chat box, theyre here to play and thats fine too
I usually say hi, when playing a turn based game. When playing live chess, and I usually play 15 minute games, I do not chat. It is mostly because of the time. I focus on the game.
Good manners pay high dividends. I do think that people are wary of chatty opponents and so they don't initiate. There is also the element of detachment that leads some to think that they are playing "computer chess" and they forget that a human opponent is on the other side of the board. After a game, they'll hook a cell phone to their ears and proceed into public places where they can ignore the people around them. And then there are Laughingknights of the world. I played that adolescent once, thrashing him like a crocodile on a duck. As he treated me to vulgar insults during the game, I patiently waited until I made a knight move which both put him in check and attacked his queen. My simple typed message to him? "Fork you."
my son plays on this site. he's 8. i've instructed him to not use the message box, and ignore anything in it by going to the moves tab straight away.
remember "don't talk to strangers?" here's a wake up call for you - you're strangers.

What a wonderfull example to set our future generations, what a world it will be! Thank you so much :^ )

I have to agree with L. You are teaching your son to be rude.
Around the world today, almost everyone becomes indifferent to the people surrending them. Fear of a somekind of sexual maniac or a repressive person or an addict looking for money or perhaps simply the drive to go to work and finish the day's work.
What a sad world we are in today. In 1965 the world population was about 2.5 billion people and eveyone said , when crossing a person on the street, either hello how are you today? or simply gave a smile which lightened up the other person`s face man or woman.
With the population being over 6.5 billion people today, eveyone is suspicious of even their neighbours, makes sense as there are statiscally more crazy people on the block.
It is not only polite to answer : "how are you today" or "welcome to our game and the best to you", but it also show that a person is civilized. and if the responder does not wish to continue conversation all they have to do is say I want to concentrate on my game and do not wish to converse.
How sad as we can take several days to answer the move and only one minute to converse.
This is the new world with educated people, afraid of encounters, devoid of human compassion and leaving to the next one to make a move.
Manners are not taught today, whether it be table manners, look at your children's kids, my own experience, or look at social manners.
We do have a long way to go to understand that we all are humans and should communicate.
My grandmother was speaking of a salesman she spoke to over the phone. Later she met him. she said that she was surprised he was black(he "didn't sound like it". He "sounded intelligent".)
Yeah, there was a time when people said hi how are you doing. But, they also said things like what are you doing in this restaurant nigger.
I never get when people say the young are getting worst. Yes as in anything there are the good, bad and in between. Normally the people that call me sir are people who are not necessarily being courteous(they are trying to scam me out of some money).
Some of the most courteous people I have ever met are 16 and under. Some of the most rude and inconsiderate people I have ever met are between there 40s and 70's. But, then again it is the other way around as well. You show your ignorance when you start generalizing a whole group.
People today don't have the manners and courtisys they used too. For example, it's no longer considered rude to wear a hat/cap indoors by many people. Older people say 'thank you driver' after they get off the bus. Younger people tend to call them cunts. I don't tend to say hello during an internet chess game (not sure why, I believe it's rather rude off me), but I always say gg at the end of it.
I think one excuse people have at this site is that depending on broswer and the size of the board, the chat box can be a little hard to find (although I play with it hidden (for bigger board) and make it smaller so I can say gg at the end).
the use of term "cunts" here is confusing to me..but i am "old school"!!!
life is about choices. if you choose to speak to someone thats your choice. if not well again your choice. wether its rude or not well thats an opinion and you dont have to listen to those if you choose not to.
