Medication in tournaments

I'm new to chess and I've been wanting to try out a tournament. However, I'm prescribed Lisdexamfetamine to combat my ADHD. I know Ridilin and Adderall are illegal in tournaments but what about Lisdexamfetamine? It's also a powerful amphetamine but is released slower throughout the day. Do I just need to not take the morning of the tournament? I can't quit it because then I begin to struggle with work and taking care of myself. Any ideas?

You don't have anything to worry about for US Chess tournaments and if you have a prescription you shouldn't have any issues anywhere. Other than something really strong FIDE events you don't have anything worry about anyway

I mean yea, I want to play in person. I know I'm probably not good enough to win, but I live in the St. Louis area where the USCF is headquartered and they have ton of events and it would be fun and probably a good learning experience.

Thanks for the response, I shoulda stated that I'm prescribed this medication. I guess in general I kinda want to play in person, meet new people, and learn new things.

Switch to marijuana. That's legal everywhere! Except pie eating contests.

Lol, I don't think my anxiety would like that. And would probably make my moves a lot slower xD

@malikigh I’m not sure what the rules are in America but I think if you have a diagnosis and prescription they shouldn’t have a problem with you taking them. I have ADHD as well, and am starting atomoxetine in a few weeks, so I should probably look into this more! Good luck :)

I’ve been to a bunch of OTB tournaments, just go and play. They don’t really check anything. It’s not like they are making people pee in a cup or anything.

My advice? Do NOT ask for medication advice on a chess site. Talk to a medical doctor and research what meds the tournaments will allow. If your medication is in a gray area, ask to speak to someone in the tournament who would have this particular kind of information.

An immaculate bovine conception.

And you may still get a cow yet

Don't listen to this know-it-all. I'm not a medical doctor, but I am a certified voodoo doctor. What you need are some chicken bones and a motherless goat. Throw them bones, milk that goat, and snort hashish. CURED.

I'll send the bill later. Normally I my advice costs a cow, but for you - just two pigs... and one of your wives.

You. Shush. Now. Thanks!happy

Lisdexamfetamine is listed under S6 Stimulants.

You can apply for a therapeutic use exemption:

What you're really trying to do is cheat by taking a performance enhancing drug.

That is a reach lmao. If I wanted to cheat then I wouldn't tell anyone about it. Not ask people if this is against the rules. If it is, I wouldn't take my medication that day.

Wow, thank you so much for your response. I read the rulebooks and it all seems fair, I was originally prescribed this medication to combat Anxiety as Anxiety is normally a symptom of severe ADHD. I guess I would have to reach out to a US Anti-Doping organization and see if I can get a TUE for my medicine. I can't thank you enough for your well thought out response, it takes time to gather all that information.

You're not going to be playing in FIDE-rated events. Don't worry about it.

You can double check that by talking to the USCF. https://new.uschess.org/

@38

"These Anti-Doping Rules shall apply to FIDE and to each of its National Federations."
Lisdexamfetamine is a prohibited substance and using it is cheating unless you have a therapeutic use exemption.
Of course in lower events your chances of getting caught are smaller, but that is besides the point. It is the same in amateur cycling, bodybuilding, weight lifting...
The right thing is to take the medicine as prescribed, no more, no less, but let your doctor fill out and sign the therapeutic use exemption form.
