Look at the openings you play, and the moves your opponents play. Try to recall when you feel uncomfortable in certain positions. Often times, it's pattern recognition that decides who falls for what. It only takes one move to fall into a worse position...all in all, I recommend studying strategy and tactics in grandmaster games, as well as completing some problems in tactics trainer.
mercurial style
thank you for the advice; whenever i realize that an opening has flaws, i switch openings... like for example, i've noticed that most of my losing games in the king's indian attack revolve around the backward d-pawn... not sure if this is the right way to go.
anyways, the part of "feeling uncomfortable in certain positions" is some good advice, thx!
Sometimes that backward d pawn is sacrificed with a d3-d4 push. I played a 1900 in a rapid game in Asheboro half a year ago in my specialty Kings Indian Defense. It got my knight to b3 with tempo and a super active position. He was defending until the endgame where I made a blunder (completely inconsequential of my opening play!I may do a video on the Kings Indian Attack later; I've regained rating points with it!
Nice! But I am sure that the d pawn cannot be sacked in every situation; it is a true weakness in the long run. like you can't stop some good ol' rook from gobbling it, especially if black has a pawn on c5. Usually to avoid this, I play c4 as white instead of the usual e4 in the kid now. I think I solved the problem! yey uncomfortable position gone
good advice, very good.

I'm analyzing every chess game i ever played here with lichess engine, and i've noticed that in some games, I make no mistakes, and in others, I make lots.
there is a sort of inconsistency with my play that i want to get rid of. any suggestions? does this usually mean that im lacking something tactically? Just look at my game history and you can see what i mean. i play very well sometimes, and other times, i just play stupidly. or mebbe I am good against certain styles of opponents and bad against others.
thanks!
