johnmusacha you may want to rethink your definition of "sleazy". Anyway this thread has convinced me that I shouldn't put my money into this chess tournament, or into poker etc. Way too much gambling and cheating. I'll put my money on Wall St where there's none of that crap.

Ha!  Comedic genius!

I think the vocal haters in here do want this event to fail. But I wouldn't be surprised to see many jump on the bandwagon once they see its unstoppable.

Yes but who here is actually going to participate?  I haven't seen a single member say that they were going to enter the tournament.

There are about 4.

oh I see jonesmurphy, so now you automatically put me into the haters category because I don't think this tournament will be succesful? Come on man, you need to calm down and respect other opinions. There wouldn't be any doubt in my mind if there were more registrants but so far there are only like 80? A few signups in more than one week is not good, just being realistic...

The tourney is still six months away. As the time gets closer, more people will sign up. When the first price bump happens on August 1st, that should be a good indicator if they are going to get close to their numbers or not.

This far out, I don't think anyone can accurately predict how many people will end up signing up.

So what happens if they only get a few hundred entries, do they lose their shirt paying the prizes? Or can they cancel? I'm thinking there will be a rush of entries if it's slow, simply because your odds of winning a prize would be greater if they don't get the numbers to profit.

They are screaming everywhere that they guarantee the prize fund no matter what, if you missed that. Of course it might just be posturing (because if you say that it's about to be cancelled, you  won't get numerous registrations).

Ivanchuk and Carlsen will have their schedules already filled.

Shirov has stated in the past that he does not want to play in the US.

Other GMs may join, but the prize fund seems geared to encourage lower rated players to take the gamble.

@Estragon

I think that the organizers are counting more on a large number of low-level players entering the tournament than they are counting on a handful of high-profile players.  If this tournament is typical, there will be about 200 players in the open section.  Their combined entry fees will be $200K.  However, their prize fund is approximately $400K.  As in most tournaments, the low-level players subsidize the open section's prize fund and pay the tournament's operating costs.

I think an interesting idea would be a high-level blitz tournament.

Maurice Ashley is trying to bring excitement and fame to chess in America. A good option might be blitz. Blitz chess is most exciting  for spectators. Having a world class knockout blitz like Saint John 1988 would attract a lot of attention.

If Ashley can have a knockout blitz and a swiss-style tournament for lower sections, it might be very successful. It's much harder to cheat in blitz and emphasis is on the spectator.
