Amy's MC Interview #2 is interesting.  It looks like she and Maurice have big plans for Millionaire Chess, LLC.

You don't need a lot to be happy, apparently. Good for you.

The supermarket nearby offers stickers to whoever buys more than $10, if you want more happiness.

But this reward is worth $1000 per year if he and his son both play!!

A bit like those fidelity programs that "offer" you something for every $X you spend there. Not quite my definition or "offering".

johnmusacha yeah there are long-term sandbaggers just waiting for the NBA to raise minimum salary to a billion dollars to come out of the closet. Etc. Etc.

'cause it's totally fair to compare basket which is a team sport with few (if any) competitions where you can enter different sections depending on your rank and win associated prizes, with chess where sections is the norm and you are playing alone.

I've sandbagged for 2 years now, and I'm rated 1790 & my peak rating was 1876. hopefully I can find money to join tourney

Irontiger you're right, much better comparison are all the tennis and golf sandbaggers waiting for the money to improve in those sports.

Please stop. You're not intelligent enough to make analogies, it's embarassing.

There are ability (not age)sections in tennis/golf tournaments ?

I'm not aware of it, but to be fair I do not follow those. On the other hand, I can probably count on one hand the number of chess events that are both open to anyone who wish to register, and without ranking sections (even if the lowest is <2100).

Scottrf please stop embarrassing yourself. In a chess game, you'd be sitting there with lone king looking at my 9 queens right now. You're welcome for that analogy. Irontiger of course there are ability sections in those sports. I'm not surprised you don't know that. You're a very ignorant and prejudiced person.

Avatar of Scottrf

There are amateur sections in golf, but of course no prize money. The money is in the sections with no handicap, the analogy is a failure.

You might get 9 queens in bullet, but that seems to be the only form of chess you're not terrible at.

Some anecdotal evidence out there.

I googled "Miami chess tournament may 2014" and it popped up with quite a few references to this : http://www.meetup.com/southfloridachess/events/166128622/ with 2 prize sections (<1800 and open).

I googled "Miami golf tournament may 2014" and found this which, as far as I can read, has no prize sections.

"Miami" was chosen because I know there are golfers up there, but it might have been any city. If you can pull out a link to a golf tournament, let's say in the US and within the next month, where there are prize sections, please do. If it's so common, you will have no trouble finding one, will you ?

There are no sections in professional golf. Only handicaps in amateur golf.

Although I value your word more than jonesmurphy's, I would be more convinced by some other proof than "I know it, and I tell you".

I'm no golfer, but I spent a few seconds googling golf tournaments. Many of the prizes are gift certificates and golf clubs. They appear to be quite valuable.

Apparently, there are quite a few tnmts that are "free" to enter (not including club fees, greens fees, and other fees), and have no monetary prizes, just gift certificates and redeemable credit. But there are also "fee" tournaments.

Some tournaments offer club credit that can be redeemed at the club golf store, others offer gift certificates, and so on. These prizes are valued ~$500-$2000 in the quick search I made.

This is important because golf has a strict delineation between professional and amateur golf. The golf pros obviously do make quite a bit of money.

What proof do you want?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handicap_(golf)

Handicaps are used to adjust your score based on your ability. Professional golfers are ranked on what they shoot only.

The question is not whether there are prizes (of course there are), but whether Tiger Woods could come up and claim those prizes if he suddenly decided to.

If not, what is exactly the mechanism that bars good/professional players from some prizes ?
