I'm actually interested to try this out. It could be very fun, however there's a few flaws I can see.
If king cannot move outside the box, then black atleast has mate in 3 (move knight). This gives white a significant disadvantage. If it was in the middle of the board, the game might be a little different. Still could use more open squares.
I only put it in the corner to mark boundaries better. You can put it anywhere on the board.
I play games of what I call Mini-chess. It is setup like this.
