Impressive contests, sometimes called the Belle Epoque tournaments were held in Monte Carlo in 1901-02-03-04. After that, Monaco dropped off the chess radar. But in 1967 chess resumed in that venue and that first year saw Bobby Fischer win the Grand Prix tournament. As in the turn of the century, the contests only lasted a few years; this time 3 years: 1967-68-69.
Each succeeding tournament, based on reporting, seems to have lessened in imprtance but not necessarily in interest.
The 1969 tournament fielded 12 competitors.
Vasily Smyslov and Lajos Portisch tied for first.
Vlastimil Hort came in third.
William Lombardy and Lothar Schmid tied for 4th/5th.
Florin Gheorghiu took 6th.
Nicolas Rossolimo, 7th.
Pal Benko, 8th.
Rudolf Teschner and David Bronstein shared 9th/10th.
Karoly Honfi came in 11th.
Predrag Ostojić end up last at 12th place.
Bronstein — Benko
Gheorghiu — Ostojich
Hort — Lombardy
Portisch — Rossolimo
