"There is speculation that a method of converting chess notation to music would produce music that was recognisable as a particular game and that when playing a game it might be possible to hear the game in your head and possibly hear a tune similar to a tune from another game."
Music during chess?

That would be interesting..... I do however find music can often correctly interpret my board position at the time...... coincidence? Perhaps, but sometimes the songs just work out that way..... Playing a guy from NYC and a guy from Germany....... as I was contemplating the potential checkmate of the NYC guy, the Cohen lyrics playing? "1st we take Manhattan, and then we take Berlin" and damned if I did not checkmate the NYC dude and immediately find the way to checkmate my German friend!
and how many times have I found myself in a resignable position, when hearing Beck's song lyrics "I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me" ....... or having made a bad move and AC/DC "Hells Bells" is playing. Or when my gambit gets foiled it is not unusual to hear Dr. John singing "I am in the right place, but it must have been the wrong time...... I was doing the right thing, but I must have used the wrong line" ...... Or crushing a player, and hearing George Thoragood singing "I'm bad to the bone"!
Maybe (no offense to monotheists.....see disclaimer below) the chess gods just like music!
I heard a chess playing preacher suggest that speculation that chess was around during the 1st century is correct, and that JC and the apostles were avid players! (what else to do after the last supper while you are waiting?) But Peter often got extremely frustrated by JC always knowing his next moves!

If anything, James Bond themes. Also, Michael Giacchino's score from the "Medal of Honor" video game (no, I'm serious; it's really good). Maybe some ambient electronica or classical. No rock, no jazz: Too distracting.

Listen to some Mozart concertos, get the legendary Mozart Effect IQ boosting, and find those !! moves all over the place.

When I first started playing in clubs and tournaments I used to listen to heavy rock while playing to get the adrenaline flowing, but don't anymore because I start analysing the music instead of the board.
It would be easy to convert chess notation to music, but it might not sound too good. It would be interesting to hear what recurring themes came up - we could record the ECO openings to see which is the least discordant!

Oh. and fyi I can't listen to any music of any kind when I play chess... messes me up terribly. Don't know why.

Lately, I've been listening to Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummer's Dance" when I play chess.
Good Celtic music.

On the subject of mapping chess games to music, check out these mathematical formulae in music form:

Really can't listen to music while I'm playing. I start to lose focus on the game after a bit. I like to listen to just about anything that gets the adrenaline going before a game though (AC/DC for sure but always get pumped listening to Lose Yourself by Eminem).

Warning: the music sounds really weird.
Edit: The Fibonacci Sequence sounds really cool! Actually quite beautiful.

I always have music playing at home, so obviously I have it playing while online.
At an OTB tournament, I've not found the music to make a difference either way. However, between rounds I MUST have my music playing to calm me down.

I dont like music when I'm playing in tournaments or going over master games at home. But when I do my tactics training I like some opera playing in the background.

sometimes i do, it's mostly classical, but thats only because i liseten to peices i play or will play (piano)/works of authors i'm playing... i found that if i listen to music with lyrics it distracts me.
even though the music is very calming at most times, i find that the effect sometimes reverses (i play chess in order to listen to the music :P).
