My first Brilliancy?!

Qd1-b3!!
I'm not sure if this will post or not??
This is my first 'Brilliant' move I've had as far as I'm aware but what makes a brilliant move? It was counteracted pretty decent really so I'm not sure how it could be classed as brilliant?
Yet in this game I played a move that I thought was brilliant & it just said best move?

 Qd3xNc4

So what makes one move a brilliant move & not another one which looks better & wins material?

IMKeto

Its a good move.  Not brilliant, but good.

Jay797

The top one was classed as 'brilliant' by the analysis & the bottom one classed as 'best'

I didn't classify them which is why I've asked 'what makes a brilliant move'?

RussianHAMMER

It is brilliant. You are on the road to master. Keep it up!

This is actually a good example why you don't get caught up in how an engine describes a move.

You can have a position where you have 2 top choices of:

1 move move mate.

Win the queen.

If you miss the mate, and win the queen, to go up a queen.  An engine will label your move a blunder.

Again...do not get caught up in how an engine labels a move.  It means absolutely nothing.  Its nothing more than an electronic ego stroke.

Jay797

Well I'll take an electronic ego stroke now & then thanks.... I make enough blunders to want to quit playing chess all together, probably every game!!

Oh & I wouldn't say I'm 'caught up' in what the engine says but more inquisitive into what constitutes a brilliant move especially when I probably won't get another!!

I have been playing this great game for 44 years.  I have lost more games than o have won.  I have spent WAY more on tournaments, lessons, books, videos, courses, food, hotels, airfare, etc. Than  have ever won.  And to this day, i wouldn't trade an of the experiences for anything.

Dont let the losses get to you.  We all lose games.  Its the learning from the losses that makes this game so frustratingly fun :-)

Why is the pin in the first position brilliant. I can see you win a pawn. ... b5 ; a4 Nc6 (intending ... Na5 and ... d5)

Deranged

I'm assuming that your intention was to win a pawn?

1. Qb3       ...b5

2. a4          ...Nc6

3. axb5      ...axb5

4. Nxb5

I never said it was brilliant the Analysis board said it was brilliant hence my question... 'what makes a move brilliant'?

I actually thought my move on the bottom board was brilliant when compared to the move on the top board but then I'm crap at chess & that's probably an easy everyday move for most of you folks!

Sorry Jay, I do not read these threads properly. Brilliant nope, the analysis board must be smoking some great drugs.
It is a good move because it is one of those chess principles: pin, forcing check, attack a stronger piece (etc).
In the bottom one what is black to do:
Qc6,Qe6,Qf7,Rd8
as white potentially has Bf4 removing the Re5 defender
of the d5 pawn.
Or take the queen and then have to exchange the 7th rook

Well done Jay that's great : ) I managed my first game with no blunders no mistakes and no missed wins yesterday so that was exciting. Shame I was playing a child but oh well I'm taking it!

you sound like a bit of a _ _

Since someone revived this thread from the grave...

Usually the computer says "brilliant move" when you make a move that's neither a capture nor a check, but is considered very strong (much stronger than your other options).

With your second example, you captured a knight, so it will just say "best move" instead.

shivam2627

brilliant moves over best move are just a mystery

the algo seems to change with out any notice. I did a move that the game analysis report said was brilliant and now a few weeks later is only Best...

I have screenshotted both reports and put them in the other brilliant move thread
