My first trip to a chess club

Just moved to Hannibal, Mo., and this is the first small town I've lived in that actually has a chess club. The local events calendar said it met 1 p.m. on Wednesdays at the local library.

I was skeptical that there'd actually be many people there, but when I got there at one there were already two people playing, and eventually I think there were eight of us in total. I played two games against a young man about my age named Jerome. First as white, he played the symmetrical defense in the queen's gambit and I ended up with a passed c-pawn on the sixth rank and up two pawns, but I got pretty greedy trying to promote or used that pawn and made some unsound sacrifices that he defended well.

Then as black, I again made some speculative sacrifices that ended with me down a bishop for two pawns but with pressure on his exposed king, but he again defended well. I was having too much fun to play patient, calm chess and kept going for dramatic aggression.

I had to leave a little early for work after that, but it was a blast to meet everyone and actually get to play some OTB chess.

I live in Missouri as well, but i wish I could say the same about my school's chess club. I don't even sweat trying to beat them (they don't even know about basic principles), and I'm not even that great of a player.
