My openings :)

I grew up playing a four Knight's game because it was essentially all my father had ever played against anyone he had ever known. Since encountering a greater variety of opponents, I have come across a greater variety of openings! However, I have never quite solitified a list of my best openings (or even openings that I'm particularily proficient at).

Therefore, I would like some wiser folk out there to make a few more recommendations based one openings I already enjoy

White:

Ruy Lopez

English

Reti

(Notice that I don't particularily like positional games)

King's indian

Some Queen's gambit variations

Vienna Game

Black:

Berlin Defense

Nimzo-Indian Defense

Pirc's

Gruenfeld

Robatasch Modern (c5 variation)

Now, I know this is a lot of openings, but I'd like to experience some other openings with a similar style of play so as to be sure I have the right ones for me!!!

Thanks,

lol, *four knights* (no spell check here... :(, my bad). Those first three are what I would consider tactical, something I'd consider more positional, for example, would be slav defense, semi-slave, Queen's gambit declined, etc. (essentially a lot of d4 moves end up under what I would call "positional")

Well, frankly Zach, I think you oughta rethink your nomenclature. QGD I'll go along with you on...but the Slav?! That's about as tactical as it gets (just think the Meran and the Botvinnik). And the Ruy (closed) is quite positional, as is the Reti. And though the English (it's true) can be pretty tactical, it's also decidedly positional as well (I've been playing it since 1975, so I know my stuff on this...which admittedly doesn't happen often when it comes to openings).

Yeah. You're definately right (of course you are when it comes to chess, you're a master! Cool), But at the level I play at, when the greco is played, or the ruy lopez, it generally ends up with a few trades earlier than I'd like leading to a very open playing field. So, you ARE right, but at this level I just don't feel like those games come down to how well pawn islands are placed. Rather they depend on who gets an open file on the opponent's king or can come up with a nice bishop sac on the castled king.
