National Master

I was looking at the site of the Fide, but I was not able to find how you can become a National Master. Is there someone who can explain me how you can become one?

NM is a USCF title for people abovve 2200 USCF rating. FIDE has the similar CM ( Candidate Master) title. I think they're both temporary though. I guess you get them as your rating passes 2200 and lose them when your rating goes below it, although I'm not completely sure about that....

However, if you manage to complete 200 rated games while above 2200, you finally get to "keep" the title of Life Master.

Most players are more interested in getting the FM title as its more international in recognition.

200 rated games? I thought it was 300......

You do not lose the NM title if you fall back below 2200, just as a GM doesnt lose his title if he falls below 2500 or an IM his should he fall below 2400. The titles are for life. Portugal also awards the NM title to those who are over 2200 (FIDE) and USCF gives the NM title for those who go over 2199 USCF rating.

For CM you just need to have a published FIDE rating over 2200 (on some rating list, may be an old one), and you need to pay FIDE 50 euro. The title is for life; it's basically a certificate that says you were 2200 once.

Similar for FM, except then it's 2300 and 70 euro.

If I make it to 2300 FIDE, I expect Goichberg to put the FM in front of my name, even if I don't pay 70 euros.

Also, how do you know if you have the LM title?

Also, Life Master sounds more like a bridge title that my grandmother should get...

Actually you do lose the title as far as USCF is concerned. That's why they have the Life Master title for completing the 300 rated games above 2200. They wouldn't have such a title if National Master was permenant. GM and IM titles are permenant because of having to earn the norms, so they don't quite relate to the National Master title.

Do you have any proof of this or is this just your opinion ? I first went over 2200 in 1984 and am still over 2200 but did dip back below 2200 once or twice since 1984. Nobody from USCF came to take my certificate away from me when I did and when I went back over 2200 again I did NOT receive another NM certificate. I know many NMs who have dipped back below 2200 and noone came to collect their certificate. If you know something I dont about the NM title please let me know ?  Any other NMs here on chess.com know that they lose the title if they go back below 2200 ?  Wink Just think if you lose your HS Diploma or college degree should you ever not be able to pass all the tests you once did , years ago, to earn those degrees, and diplomas ?!  Make sense to you ?  naaaahhhhhh... dont think so

In the United States, the title of "National Master" is awarded for life, regardless of whether the rating of a National Master subsequently goes below 2200.[1] In August of 2002, this position was codified (after being recognized as the existing status quo) by the USCF Policy Board with the passage of a motion stating "Any USCF member who has had a regular post tournament rating of 2200 or higher (published or not) has demonstrated a significant level of chess ability and is recognized by being automatically awarded the lifetime title of National Master."

Any questions ?

kco

Yes I have question, how long would it take you to become a Grandmaster ? Wink

TheOldReb

I dont think I can become a GM at age 56 and I dont think just anyone can become a GM. I am at the age that I am not likely to improve significantly and now battle just to keep from regressing.

kco

Oh well...just keep on living and enjoying your life and make the most of it.

I was born in 1953 but at heart I am about 22 . Smile In fact, I recently went to see the Eagles in concert but they are all older than me now !  Is "funky" good or bad these days ?  Wink

What the hell is your problem man?

Actually, forget it. I'm not going to waste my time having to somehow defend myself just because I pointed out many TDs weren't aware of the current implementation of the NM title.

Don't send me any more messages please. Thanks.

WOW !  I get this kind of reaction for trying to clarify things on the NM title and then he blocks me so I cannot respond !?  Whats wrong with people these days ?! It seems some people just cannot handle being wrong.

Gotta love some naming and shaming :D

Reb: there was no sarcasm in my post. I actually meant: gotta love some naming and shaming.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Reb, thanks for the clarification.

Now I will race myself to try to get FM before I "qualify" for the Life Master title.

Good luck oz ! I have been trying to make FM myself but it looks like one chess goal I may not reach.

With a true strength of 2250, it seems to me that random oscillation would eventually land you over 2300, just as it would eventually land you under 2200. This is part of my strategy. :-)

Not to mention the constant bickering with children in internet forums.

 I like to argue/debate, what can I say ?
