Just because the odds are stacked against you, doesn't mean that you can't try to improve your own play with a little bit of study and some OTB tournament play. After a couple of years, you can guage the progress you have made and see if it makes you happy.
I'll probably never make master, due to a disruption of my OTB play by grad school in the 80s/90s. It's not that big of a tragedy. I try to play my best and am happy when I succeed.
There is something about age that makes new things difficult. I used to see kids with the Rubik's cube solve it in a couple of minutes while I just sat there like a chimp with something shiny he didn't understand.
I am old and burning to get there...watch out.
