Need Advice: Should I try a tournament after 10 years of having not...

Hello all,

I need some general advice on getting back into chess seriously after having not played serious for over 10 years or so.

I played chess in highschool back in 1995-7 and recently decided to check the USCF website

http://www.uschess.org/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,181/

ID: 12665353

and saw that my rating was a low 969. At the time I was involved with sports and other things and only attended a few "The Right Move" chess tournaments as well as the chess Super Nationals in TN.

These days I play a lot of chess on chess.com recreationally. There are a ton of video's and guides and theory that was not available back then. I have just sort of been using youtube videos along with playing dozens of 1 min blitz games to try and familiarize myself with recognizing positions, traps etc, and using an engine here or there to analyze pgn files.

If I get back into chess seriously I would need advice on where and how to start. Should I seek to reinstate my USCF membership, or should I try to become FIDE rated ? Both?

Lets say  set a goal for myself to become titled...Should I reasonably expect that it will take a year or two ? What is the best way to get back on the horse ?

Ive been doing some google searching into Marshall Chess club, but I'm skeptical on weather it will be worth it for me. I am also wondering if FIDE arena will actually provide a true rating or a seperate online rating.

I'm betting competition nowdays at tournaments is really tough even at beginner / intermediate level due to so much chess information available. Has anyone else here been through this phase of getting back into chess? What was it like for you?

I took a 25 year break before coming back to play.  Go for it!
