New Elo test in development: Need community support

Hi,

I posted earlier this week regarding making a new Elo estimator. I'm making this for fun. One commenter suggested I rank the different positions by getting a lot of people to play them. So I'm asking everyone here to play them! What I'm hoping people will do is enter their Elo (or chess.com rating, I think they're similar) and then play one move per position. There are 20 positions. If I can build a big enough database, then I can probably build an accurate Elo estimator using the same problems. If you'd like to take 5 minutes to give it a try, I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Here is the link: http://rscorecalculator.com/chess/

If people are really digging it, I'll buy a new domain for the elo estimator when it's ready.

I love the idea!

thank you! I hope others feel the same way, thanks to all those who have taken the survey already :)

Chess.com online or chess.com live?  Many people's are a few hundred points different.

By the way Elo is a system / formula that can be used by any organization to rate any kind of competition (not just chess).  You can't estimate Elo, it just is what it is.  E.g. it's like saying estimate your meter stick instead of saying estimate your height.  I know that other test also calls it an "Elo estimator" but really that's not specific.  Of course in context people will know what you mean, estimate my chess rating!  It's just some may want to know what their USCF rating may be (they use Elo) while others are curious about their chess.com rating (even though chess.com uses Glicko).  Same potential problem in this development phase when people will be giving you all sorts of ratings.

In many countries "Elo" means "FIDE long time control".

Anyway, it was a barrage of tactics -- a bit weary to do so many of those in a row.

YEah maybe I should have dont a better job with the positions... maybe I will update them over time. I just first see if there is interest in this being developped but so far, I will be continuing the development. This calculator will never be perfect, it's more meant to be something fun. For example, someone like me who has never played in a chess tournament may want to see what my estimated elo is. Cheers to all those that helped so far!

OK, I staggered through the positions.  They make me want to smash something.  No way to see if I was right or wrong, or what my score was, or anything else.  Some of the problems were murkishly dificult and it was unclear how long I was supposed to think on them.

Hi guys, sorry for any confusion or if there are glitches in the software.

@GargleBlaster, sorry if my post wasn't clear, this isn't an Elo estimator, I'm building a database that will eventually work as an evaluator. In other words, if you tell me your Elo is 2000, then you make a move, I have now recorded that move and I am building a database. Later on, when the software is made, I can then use this information retroactively, so if someone makes that move, their estimated Elo is 2000. Obviously, this isn't a correct formula, but with hundreds of entries, I believe we can achieve some accuracy. So there is no "right" answer, I'm just asking people of all levels to make one move given a certain position, and I'm gathering a database for the future.

Thanks to all those who have taken part so far! I'm glad to see people are contributing.

Sorry if there's software glitches tmpacc. I agree there are flaws, but I thought I would try it. This isn't the finished product, nor has it been styled, so yes the web design is very poor :). This webpage was created to build a database, if this method proves ineffective, then I will find another way to score the problems. I'm surprised to hear it doesn't work, what browser are you using?
