I know this will upset chess traditionalists, and but hear me out. At the moment over the games in the candidates and the world chess championship match, the scoring as we all know is one point for a win and half for a draw. In the past the world championship match would continue for "as many games as it takes" after the required amount games were played. Obviously this only tested the players ability to stay alive until one person won ( I read that in these days both competitors lost a lot of weight during the games).
Obviously, this was no good.
Now after the required number of games played, and the scores are level a number of blitz games are used to determine the world chess champion. My problem with this is that there is a world rapid and blitz chess championships. This format is not good (in my opinion) for finding the best classical chess player. So I suggest the following scoring format:
Black win scores 5 points.
White win scores 3 points.
Black draw scores 2 points.
White draw scores 1 point.
I believe this would encourage the player with the black pieces to gamble (in some positions) to go for a win, if he has the advantage, instead of settling for a draw. However if black is playing for a draw then the onus will be on white to go for a win, because a draw will cost them a point.
It will also mean that there being a tie of points at the end of the match is reduced because drawing with black will count more.
If the scores are level, this is how I would tie break. The first person to win with the black pieces first, wins the tournament. This would encourage both sides to gamble with black at the start of the tournament, to win the tie break.
At the moment in the amount of times where both players play cautiously just to get the draw and effectively just scrap the game is getting boring. I believe at that level it you have the white pieces you should be trying to win the game not settle for a draw. This system would discourage players from doing this.
My too pence worth what do you think. Go o
n I can take it.
