I think that was a commonly held belief at least into the 1960s-70sm though, of course, not a universally held belief. At one time slavery was considered not only justified, but ordained by G_d. People today may be appalled by the idea, but had these same people lived back then and in that culture, they would have more than likely subscribed to that concept. People are pretty much products of their times.

You mean men are superior in everything chess related? I don't agree. Judit Polgar recognizes differences between men and women and says that women need to learn to utilize their strengths in chess.
I trust her opinion as well. I'm sure that she recognizes that she thinks differently, but she knows how to bolster her strengths.

But western kids suck a lot at maths. In schoolwork oriented cultures like asia the gap is (afaik) smaller.

Looking at the FIDE ratings in China, I see that two women are in the top 20 there, Yifan Hou and Wenjun Ju at 8th and 19th respectively.
That's a far cry from equality even in an academic country. Perhaps chess and math are different enough that men will dominate?
