Nigel Short: Women's brains not chess brains

The problem is I've found this to be the case in pretty much every area of pursuit I've been interested in. It's in Chess, it's in philosophy, it's in the martial arts, really anywhere where there is a disproportionally high rate of male to female participation. I also think a lot of these pursuits attract a disproportionate number of insecure people. I've heard the online gaming world is the same. It seems a lot of the traditional outcast caste gets into these type of pursuits to have something they are good at, and that by it's very nature is a arcane. It makes people feel special. It reminds me of the clamor for black belt status in the martial arts. Everyone wants that black belt because they think the other adherents hold that rank in high regard. Of course this leads to massive ego inflation which leads to rank inflation and so,on and so forth. In reality, it's just a piece of cloth. Bruce Lee never had a belt. (Well, I assume he had one to hold up his pants.). But you get the picture. It's the at least, at least I'm good at this and this validates me as a man, woman, human being, etc. After a time though, people in these pursuits should have a deeper and wider view of what they are doing. They should start competing against themselves and not worrying who is next to them.

I don't think that holds up for synchronized swimming.

Masamune314

Cats don't like synchronized swimming. Right?

Dont see any mystery in why some activities are more popular with women and other more with men.

Women and men like to do different shit because they are different. It's that simple really :)

It's just once you start our with the faulty idea that women and men are identical that you get perplexed that some things are dominated by one or the other. And off couse people invent all sorts of imaginary friends, dark hidden cultural forces that you know MUST be there even though nobody can say what they are and how they work.

When your theory is in evident contradiction with what you actually see, you need to invent a lot of stuff to save your worldview from the harsh world of observation. To do a philosophy 101, it's much the same as the medievals that added epicycle after epiycle to keep the planets in circular orbits.

I'm thinking more along the lines of why it matters to the dudes who say this stuff. Who cares who's participating in what? Why do we recycle this over and over and to what benefit? If the men are so annoyed that the women are annoyed, so what? I remember a long time ago I think the Shah of Iran made some comment after some pro-woman law was passed saying there had never been a great female chef, basically saying to the hardliners, it's alright boys, this new law is no threat to you. None of these women will naturally make it that far anyway, so no need to go changing the regime...well...that escalated quickly... (That last bit was sarcasm to any of you serious history buffs.) Still a little true.

Also, not enough coffee. Debating powers are at sub optimal levels today. :(. Will need to mainline the java.

Synchronized swimming is a past time of the devil's witches and all shall be burned at the stake. World without end, amen.

chess is unlike most sports because women are able to compete against men

vera menchik  the world's first women's chess champion, competed in chess tournaments with some of the world's leading male chess masters, defeating many of them, including future world champion max euwe

from wikipedia if i remember well

Well, the fact remains that no matter how much you think genetics keeps women from the highest levels of chess or really, whether women's brains ON AVERAGE are not as good at chess, if one woman can defeat a grand champion, then eventually, given the right combination of individuals, a woman will make it to the top and stay there for a while. Eventually. It may never be as common. But it is possible, and what one woman can do, another can do. So, really, this discourse was silly from the start.

So to follow up on M314's comments ?....If you removed all ego from chess what would you have ?

Ego, as is used in the common vernacular, is just an overabudence of confidence. We need confidence and a little humility too. It will not make you less aggressive in competition, it will make you smarter. You need to know yourself. In MA for example, you need etiquette and humility because traditionally in a simpler time, too much ego could get you killed, or a lot of people killed. Tempers flare when you are carrying swords, and well...Tempers flare when you are a trained MA and you go overboard, you are going to jail. To much ego in chess, and you damage the reputation of your game.

If we assume that sport is any activity that challenges one's balance constantly,

while supposing that mental balance is a physical quality as well,

then we could suggest healthy men are physically more balanced than healthy women,

thus more inclined to achieve the highest scores,

if we also control for natural talent.

Yet, we knew that already.

Bob is 2100 and plays Ron who is 2500. Bob loses because the other guy is stronger.

Jane is 2100 and plays Ron who is 2500. Jane loses because she's a woman.

Spicy foods such as peppers are natural fat burners. Not only that, they are full of antioxidants and prevent infections. Also, it helps against heartburn. Heartburn is a disease that is casued by low acid volumes in the stomach. As a result, carbohydrates don't get broken down well enough and start fermenting (producing gasses) in the stomach causing weak acid to rise to the esophagus which can give a painful sensation in the chest - peppers are good for the digestive system. Spicy food is not only delicious, it's very healthy.

When my father orders Thai food he gets it extra hot with extra chili sauce on the side. I don't think he's showing off at his age. I did know a guy who would down bottles of hot sauce as a party trick though. He once downed a small bottle of Dave's Insanity. And didn't die... And SJ +1.

Maybe men like the taste AND showing off?
