''women eat spicy dishes because they enjoy the taste, according to researchers, while men tend to eat spicy foods because they enjoy showing off.''

Can you show of by eating spicy food? I never thought of it as a show off thing.

Well he said it in an interview, so I guess the interviewer asked him about it.

This is really good....Thanx M314 !

I aim to please. You know, I've thought about these things much more deeply because of my kids. I got into MA because I had a lot of stress dealing with the grieving process from the diagnosis of my two kids and the intense therapy I had to manage and many times provide to them myself. It changed my whole way of thinking about what is important and what happiness and contentment really mean. I doubt I would have stuck around in MA if not for the perseverence I saw in my kids who had to struggle to do what comes naturally to everyone else. My patience increased immensely, and I gained a new perspective on what it means to be sucessful. I guess that's where my whole you need to be better than you were yesterday and not worry about who is with you on that path and how far they are comes from. That's what perplexes me about this whole thing.

That might be the averages. But perhaps I'm not the average man in that I would just eat for taste. Besides, people have different ways of showing off -- women would probably show off through looking good, whereas men by doing weird things.

Yeah, if someone was to argue for a gender difference, they wouldn't be able to get away with the second sentence. They would have to try to say that cases in which the man is the 2500 and the woman is the 2100, rather than the other way around, is the more common scenario.

The problem is I've found this to be the case in pretty much every area of pursuit I've been interested in. It's in Chess, it's in philosophy, it's in the martial arts, really anywhere where there is a disproportionally high rate of male to female participation. I also think a lot of these pursuits attract a disproportionate number of insecure people. I've heard the online gaming world is the same. It seems a lot of the traditional outcast caste gets into these type of pursuits to have something they are good at, and that by it's very nature is a arcane. It makes people feel special. It reminds me of the clamor for black belt status in the martial arts. Everyone wants that black belt because they think the other adherents hold that rank in high regard. Of course this leads to massive ego inflation which leads to rank inflation and so,on and so forth. In reality, it's just a piece of cloth. Bruce Lee never had a belt. (Well, I assume he had one to hold up his pants.). But you get the picture. It's the at least, at least I'm good at this and this validates me as a man, woman, human being, etc. After a time though, people in these pursuits should have a deeper and wider view of what they are doing. Well, yeah. It attracts certain people. But it doesn't take away the beauty of the game. Chess isn't responsible for the people it attracts, it's just responsible for being beautiful.

See, everyone relies on anecdotes.

That was more of an off-the-cuff humorous response to Mr. All Caps a couple of posts before. I felt like being droll.

Well then, "lol" instead :)

I never said it was responsible. It just attracts. It just is. A beautiful sword kata gets me right in the gut. I must say being a lowly chess player, a very good game gives me the shivers, in a good way. It's just an unusual beauty that attracts a smaller slice of people than say, soccer.

I prefer using snark. And weird things. Usually snark about weird things.

Oh by the way because I like philosophy. Once thing I found weird about it, at least the way I was taught it... at one point you learn about feminist ethics. That actually includes many views that have nothing to do with gender -- a lot of the views are just things that philosophers who were female tended to think in more modern times. But I just found it weird that they would say things like, our philosophy has been dominated by "male" ideas like utilitarianism, and that we haven't had enough "female" philosophies (so they went on to develop "care ethics," which are some interesting ideas by the way). What on earth is a "male" or "female" philosophy? You can't be a utilitarian if you're a girl? Yes, philosophy had been dominated by men, and they were probably much more sexist than what should be tolerated, but when you complain about philosophy sounding "too male" you start to contradict yourself -- you're now the one who is making an opinion a "male" opinion or "female" opinion. A theory is good/bad independently of whether men or women believe it.

Ok, because if we were to incarcerate chess and banish it from society, I would cry. Not for its sake, but for mine.

That's way to extreme for my taste. The "care" people probably don't like MA too much either. Too violent! Makes people violent! Ugh. I don't know though. I never studied feminist philosophy. I was heavy into the political philosophy and ontology. Aesthetics was the worst though. Much harder than you would expect. My head just about exploded from that one.

There are a lot of opinions as to why more women don't go into philosophy. I won't deny it is very male centered and in classes you do tend to get into "aggressive" debate sometimes and you have to be assertive and hold your own. Often I'd employ the Socratic method with folks, trying to lead them to where I was going instead of pushing them. At times that worked, at times not. The main thing was to keep your cool. A lot of people can't, and especially when you get some very religious people, as you always do, and there is questioning of things people hold sacred. It can get under folks collar. But,usually, those people didn't stick around. Of course this was 20 years ago.

Yeah, well. I'm just gonna delete my account. I'm through with chess.com.

Looks like there are sects, cliques and clans in this place. They're regulars on chess.com so when one of these cliques or clans stalk and harass a member, it's not the sickos of the clan that get muted. But the person they harass.

And looks like they've got the gestapo working in here.

Erik's lost a grip on his company.

How about taking a look at your end especially with your behavior, why not just take it easy. So you won't keep making new account.

Aesthetic Philosophy will lead you to the center of you. But, most ppl down deep are kinda scared to go there. I've been looking for me all my life (and the one before this) and I hope to never find me 'cuz the search has been so fun ! Besides, I'm afraid if I do ?....it'll all be over - for some strange premontion. Maybe 'cuz inside I feel in my last conscious moments is when I'll find me. And then I'll close my eyes for the last time.

Marcel (a wonderful chess player !) helped some of us take in art 'cuz "I say it's art - dammit !" - and not that it's accepted as art....which I've always found philosophically fascinating. And let's not 4get Jackson Pollock. Thanx Jackson....will always love your work.

And thank you M314 for taking me into Aesthetic Philosophy. Yes, I'm closely following....and I believe that all we do is emotionally driven 1st.
