no
Well... as far as I know anyway. I've never tried it.
Keep in mind that takebacks are only in an Online game. Live has no takeback and I doubt it ever will.
It's not about win, win, win, or following the rules at any cost. Actually, there are a lot of variations of chess, and there was a chess without castling, for example. But takebacks simply are against the essence of the game.
That kind of doesn't make sense to me. Why put take backs on an online game which has a longer time requirement for a move but not for live games where it is easier to make mistakes?
No wonder I couldn't find it. it's not available for live chess. Um.
How can you improve if you are not forced to calculate the consequences of a piece sac, for example? Or to defend a difficult position you reached because a mistake?
En passant, rules for castling, getting the white square in the right-hand corner, putting the Q on it's same colored square, not confusing where the N & B goes, knowing how to choose who get white or black, knowing when and how to resign...this is all stuff that should be learned sooner or later.
I vote for sooner.
I'm pretty new to chess and I know all of these rules except how to determine who gets white and who gets black. Could someone please enlighten me?
And for the record. I don't like the idea of takebacks. Unless I'm playing someone who has no idea what they're doing. Then I try to help them give me more of a challenge and kind of end up just playing myself.
Well, on this site it is just random unless the person who initiates the game chooses however in tournaments you are told who is black and white. When people are just hanging out playing fun games they just kind of pick and a lot of times you play two so you can switch colors.
I think that to avoid cheap wins, maybe takebacks should be allowed. These games are not at a tournament site. We are playing them in our homes or at the office. If you have to do something, you can't put the game on pause. If you want absolute rule over chess where no takebacks are enforced then enter OTB tournaments.
It's rather silly how people can't form communities here where people get along and talk about games. They must WIN WIN WIN, even if it is a cheap win.
Please.......its a game, cheap wins are cheap wins, a cheap win is a stupid loss.
If someone wants to play a game with takebacks I am all for it, but to say that all games should have the options of takebacks because you cant forecast moves is pretty much against the nature of the game.
Chess is a game of war, it is the oldest game of war known to mankind. War has no takebacks. Once again if someone is training or playing with friends for fun ( as most games should be about fun) then sure, as long as both parties agree. Takeback games are in the same essence as Unrated games. Straight fun ( and well for me the same goes for rated).
Here's something to consider with the Take Back option:
1. When a player requests a take back it is completely up to the opposing player whether to accept or decline it.
2. People make mistakes. I've seen masters play and make obvious mouse slips and I'm sure it's goes along the lines of sportsmanship.
3. It's good for teaching and learning purposes! Even if they don't add it to rated games how about an unrated option just like online games? Starting a new game every time just isn't that productive.
4. It doesn't hurt to add another button does it? (:
So long as takebacks are only in games where both parties pre-agree it (with it off by default) then I couldn't care less if the option is there because no-one at even an intermediate level would seriously want to play a take-back game so it wouldn't affect me. If I had to keep responding to whether I wanted takebacks in a game I play it would drive me mad though since the answer would be No 100% of the time even if I am playing someone who is learning. You learn by making mistakes!
Sure-fire way to prevent mouse slips: Click the piece you want to move, then click the square you want to move it to. Does take a little more time, but you never have a mouse slip this way.
@glamdring27 it would be the same as the draw offer. It'd be of no inconvenience at all.
@KillTheHorsie Mouse slips are a small occurence even masters make mouse slips and they're playing at a much higher level than us. But the point is: it happens.

And my point was that it does not have to happen. This was just to inform those who didn't know.

I just thought maybe (and I was kinda hoping) there was some archaic, but still on the books, thumb war rule or something.

In casual games, you can put a white pawn in one hand, and a black in another, in a way your opponent can't see. Then hold out your fists and let them pick. It's a way to make it random.
At tournaments it's done by a pairing program, but effort is made (again by the program) that colors are alternated, so you'll get roughly as many whites as blacks.

And my point is even professional race car drivers get into crashes. Nothing in this world is fool proof.Just because it doesn't have to happen, doesn't mean it won't.
I can't see it. Can anyone show me?
