wow whose brain did you get

Ur chances r better starting a new game

no but you speak in sentences now! You must have eaten someone's brain.

As @btickler said this debate rages on for eternity and I already won the debate on a previous thread. Quitting guarantees a loss. Playing on gives you a chance.

Lmao as if @osfan37 thinks I'm a poor sport for not resigning in a game I didn't end up losing, it beggers belief.

is this small "chance" worth the time though? That's the other side. Most of the time, when you resign in a losing position you can use that time to play another game. Resigning guarantees a loss, but usually when you resign that's because you're losing anyways.

Nowhere did anyone acknowledge that a side won the debate.

Of course it's worth the time. As I said previously, I enjoy the game, whether I'm winning, losing or drawing. I enjoy trying to manipulate a stalemate or a time out as much as I do trying to get checkmate. It's a game at the end of the day, one me and my opponent have agreed to play. If my opponent is good enough they will quickly end a losing position, if not my decision to play on is justified.

I am enjoying my chess journey! Especially the part where I win!

Oh, I like to win too!  I just don’t consider it as much of a win when my opponent quits early. I agree there is a point in some games where an opponent should resign, it’s just that my line is a tiny fraction more towards the “fight it out to the bitter end” of the spectrum. I’m sure as I get better, it will become more obvious when it is proper to resign. When I teach people to ride dirt bikes, I teach them to always stand up, as in time they will lean when it is proper to sit down. I think resigning is a skill that people eventually figure out, and if they don’t, I will do my best to punish them to the end ... at least in theory.

Since I haven't been able to go to OTB in a while I measure my growth by online ratings... it might not be accurate but I sure like the graphs. That's why I stand with @UWillResignYesUWill...

This is the thing I really don't get. How does it save time? I mean even if you don't enjoy playing losing/winning positions, you've still committed to a game of chess right? For some time clearly isn't an issue as they admit to trying to promote every pawn first which clearly takes longer than seeking checkmate.

Let's say you have 1 hour of free time and you play chess. I would rather not spend that time playing on in a hopeless position, rather I would like to start fresh.

Your argument works like a charm if people have as much time as they want.

Avatar of TheCalculatorKid

Yeah so you have an hour. As part of hour you sign up to a 3 minute blitz game. You've committed 6 minutes of your time there, if you choose to resign, that's on you, but insisting someone else resigns, over what is probably only a 2 minute waiting period, that's what I think is plain wrong. It's the notion that someone SHOULD resign that I strongly disagree with. You choosing to resign because you'd rather quit and play a new game, fine. But if your opponent doesn't, because maybe like me they enjoy looking for a swindle, that's also fine. No one SHOULD resign unless they, or and not their opponent, deem it necessary.

Avatar of sndeww

I never "insisted" that people should resign. I said why I prefer it when others do that, and I try to explain my point of view.

Personally, I try to get as much chess experience as possible, and so that's why I resign in losing positions. So then I will be able to play another game.

What I don't understand is why play on in a position like this:

https://www.chess.com/daily/game/275040860

It's a daily game, no less. No counterplay, less pawns, no pieces, endgame...

Avatar of sndeww

I mean, I know it doesn't take much time to move, but why spend any time at all?

Avatar of sndeww

@tempaiturbo black has enough play to justify playing on; I believe it has the potential to be a draw

Avatar of tictactoeprodigy

Depends. If im up a significant amount of time, or still have some counterplay, ofc I’ll play on and try to swindle/flag them. If not then I’ll resign.

if my opponent is much lower rated then I’ll probably play on regardless

Unless you are literally 100% sure you've lost, don't resign.

99% is not 100. Remember that.

That means white shouldn’t resign in the daily game I posted even though black can premove everything and win
