Wait, don't respond to that. I now see why what I just said is stupid. Embarassed

The game unfortunately will fail.

It wouldn't be too hard to avoid a zugzwang like this.  The enemy only has two knights, and therefore can only block two of your liberty squares.  Here's another game I made.  White has several "back and forth" move possibilities.  This game is a definite draw. (see post39)

Provided black lets you get to that position.

Anyway, why play for a garantied draw when you could play for a win?

The flaw of the game is that someone could spend a great deal of time getting very good at playing for a win, but anytime an opponent chose to use my system, they can force a draw.  All your skill is for nothing.  A total amateur could draw with a grandmaster.

Black can't prevent white (or vice versa I suspect) from acheiving an unmateable position in this.  Show me how it's possible.

The main concept of bringing on more new tactic, strategy and creativity is nice, and many chess variants, from 960 to capablanca's to bughouse etc wished to introduce something new in the game of chess (usually, by introducing new pieces and/or new squares).

You can add and remove something (es. the peasant variant of chess: 8 pawns + K vs 3/4 N+K+pawn: very violent representation of old ages), but the captures are something you can't remove, they too much inherent the game of chess. They are fundamental part of the tactics, of the strategy of the game. Chess could not be a notviolent game imho.

Short question: How can a pawn com to the end of the board? There is always a pawn blocking it. ;)

good point

apparently very rarely! so that just means there's no need for any extra rule! the only rule is that you can't take pieces. it ought to be really easy to program that into a normal version

I wish I had a proper chess set so I could try playing a game of this version with myself.

My initial reaction would be no pawns, and a closed setup like 9-ball pool, where the 9 ball would be the queen.  Just an initial knee-jerk reaction though.

cowsreallymoo

this will end in all draws

I quite like that idea. Without the pawn walls I think it would be harder to get the draws. Maybe there is some life in this idea?

I'm still not wrapping my mind around this concept.  How can the Queen go anywhere she wants?  Why wouldn't I just create a huge pawn barracade right off the bat and prevent you from coming into my area with anything besides your knights?  Is it possible to create a perfect defense quickly and thusly make the game unwinnable?

I think the last one is why I have a problem understanding why you would play this instead of regular chess.  Regular chess has strategies that are difficult to get around, but without stupidity nobody becomes completely unable to win within a few moves of starting.

I guess this is something that I may never understand.  Maybe it is the aggressive American in me that does not purposefully seek out violence, but will mete it out when the situation calls for it.  I am happy you have found a version of a beloved game that you enjoy, however I don't think it shall ever be my preference.

Is there a nonviolent chess club on Chess.com? I couldn't find one. Sometimes I really want to focus on strategy without the anxiety about being captured.

Yes, I'm new...only playing chess for a couple of years. I imagine the games will at least mostly end in draws. Maybe there can be a rule about What pieces can capture, e.g., only pawns can capture pawns??
