not everyone can reach 2000

I will say it depends how young you started, the older a person is; it become more difficult to reach 2000 otb rating.

RebeccaLoran

I have to say that regardless of my rating I am going to train and work hard to limit and remove my mistakes during each game. I believe people who reach 2000+ are those of us who can not and will not stop pushing ourselves. It is a sickness, and you should not envy those of us who have it.

Although I would like to have that GM title. I'll find a way to make chess part of my life. Nature finds a way. I don't know how, I don't know when, but I will achieve it.

Or I'll die.

Very often there will be a post that asks what one has to do to reach a certain chess rating level, often it is above 2000, maybe even a grandmaster. My view is even reaching 2000 is an impossible task for the vast majority of players (myself included). I believe that at this level or above you have to be born with a very good memory (as well as unusual self-discipline). The % of players who reach this level is quite small and its my view that there is good reason for this. Any comments???

I think this is false. While not everyone can make 2000, I would submit that at least 60% of folks could become at least 2000 if they put in the time and had the right direction.

greenfreeze

why can't everyone reach 2000

all you have to do is study and play games

SilentKnighte5

The reasons most people don't reach 2000 has nothing to do with their chess ability.

It's true - not everybody can reach 2000. I know I couldn't reach it - pretty much until I did..

I was 42 years old when I got my first FIDE rating - which was 2012 (the rating, not the year).

before that I had only Israeli tournament ratings, but the highest I ever got was 1903, back in 2003 (the year, not the rating).

ivandh

Not everyone reaches 2000 - so let's party like we're rated 1999

ArgoNavis

User "not everyone" does not exist

Therefore he cannot reach 2000

So your point that user "not everyone" can reach 2000 is false.

+1 !!! And many more

In memoriam

Purple Rain blew my mind when it came out - I think I was 13. What a song. What a performer.

Everyone must die - but 57 years is way too early, especially for such a unique genius.

As some stupid actor said in a stupid movie I hate:

"Don't buy drugs. Become a popstar and they'll give you them for free!"

solskytz

I didn't know that he was a druggie. Of course that would shorten anyone's life expectancy considerably...

Well, I certainly don't believe he died because of a flu.

solskytz

This can happen - but it would mean that his immune system was already way too weak. Who knows what could have caused that?

Certainly he was connected to the wrong people - this, one can say with confidence.

About the rest - if it was drugs, or AIDS, or just plain exhaustion from overdrive, over time, without proper rest and/or food - I wasn't part of his worldwide tours, so I'm really not in a position to tell.

Everybody dies eventually. We can remember someone's life without the tabloid-press sensationalism that is the norm these days.

^ i'm with spuddie.

We only got sixty years on the planet- and if you get any more, you might wish that you hadn't.

I don't agree, I think anyone can reach 2000 even without talent (maybe even more).

A leading Russian player one said anyone with mediocre talent can reach grandmaster, although he's probably exaggerating, there's an element of truth to it.

To put it in perspective, alot of the people who become GMs, goes through very intensive training, alot of them LIVE chess. Wake up, study, sleep. This means a big sacrifice in that they won't be able to work, something which this is an impossible task for most people, not because of limitations of the intellect, but how unpractical it is to adopt such a lifestyle.

My belief is that through sheer dedication, master level can probably be reached by the majority of the population, as long as they aren't affected by any mental illness or disabilities.

You might just be onto something here, sirrichardburton!

A few days ago a pundit said that "chess is a waste of time".  And he might even have conclusively explained the 1972 Laugardalshöll shenanigans by saying that "chess is causing hatred between people".

I agree. Most individuals should be able to reach 2200+, with the right practice and study.

Though, most individuals either don't have the time, work ethic, or motivation to put in that kind of work. Which is why most players don't reach 2200+ in the first place. :D
