Hi does anyone know how many players make up all the national federations? I tried googling this to no avail though. Just trying to get a handle on some statistics mainly how many people are there worldwide who might actually show up at a chess tournament, realistically speaking. Thanks.

Thanks I saw the chessbase article and it just had me wondering if these are the population percentages then what percentage of the population of the world say knows how to record the moves then? But yeah this is a good start although I saw another source where someone speculated that really only several million people would consider themselves "tournament players" ect...well maybe someone else can expand on this. Perhaps I'm just being lazy, but it might be interesting to put it out there anyway for others also. Thanks though.
Another way to think of it is say someone writes a chess book that everyone loves...what would be the potential audience for it, even say counting library goers? Don't worry, that definitely doesn't apply to me, of course.
Ok found it actually...there are approximately 7 to 7.5 million registered chess players (members of national federations) on Planet Earth.
