Online Chess not always rewards good play!!?

I do on occasions enter the odd chess tournament through I.C.C.F. I had recently a game and was awaiting my fate on a game having seen my opponent could sacrifice an exchange and a Bishop and set up a forced mate in 6 moves, but no the game lingered on and on for another 15 moves?! I asked my opponent did he see the pretty forced mate, oh yes saw that he said but dare not have executed it? why I asked... he replied I was reported in my last event of using assistance due to playing sacrifices so cannot show I being clever???
I WONDER if this paranoia goes on with Chess.com too, where players see a nice finish and decide not to play it incase it should go against them!!?🤔

If players are playing fairly, they don't have to worry about playing their best chess.
