HAs there ever been a case of a game played where someone focused too much on the center in the opening(preferably white) and then lost the initiative to checkmate because of that?

It's a really weird question no offence bud. I guess there are various games where black has used the Dutch or King's Indian openings and won by attacking quickly on the kingside whilst white built a big centre and expanded on the queenside.

Yeah, happens quite a bit actually in my bullet games, where they try to attack your fianchettoed position with h4+h5, etc. 

It's almost always unsound though, since the center is the most important part. 

If the center is locked though, obviously you can no longer pay attention to it.
