Outrageous - Chess.com is Running an Engine on our iPads While We play

While I can't prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt, I have long suspected that chess.com is running analyses of our blitz games as we play, as an anti-cheating measure, and also as a way to pair you in your next game. (If you play poorly, you are paired with a lower rated player, whereas if you play well you are paired with a higher rated player, more times than not). What I've noticed however is that when playing on my iPad or iPhone, the device gets very hot when I'm doing nothing but playing a chess game in the chess.com app. This implies that rather than running the engine on their servers, they are hijacking my CPU in order to provide cheat detection. I do not consent to this, as it can be damaging to my iPad and it wastes energy I'd rather not waste. We need to protest this as a community.

Can you prove this?

OP nailed it...but should have kept his mouth shut!

I don't have to prove it. I'm the customer. When I play chess here my device heats up. Give me a better explanation. Also, give me credit for figuring out how chess.com does its live chess pairings.

Unless I get an adequate response from the staff, I will be spreading this information on Google+, Facebook and Twitter

Wow dude you discovered the rating point system good job!!!!!
scrooge74

Maybe the app coding has a bug and over heats the CPU

MGleason

While chess.com does not reveal the details of their detection system, it does not involve running an engine on your device.  There are many potential explanations for your device getting hot.

What's this aboot?

Alright. My anger is receding a bit. But let's be reasonable here. You're playing chess on an app against real humans by relaying moves to a server and back. This should not consume much power. You could say that this is a great iPad app – except for the abysmal fact that it overheats the device and drains the battery. Chess.com is great - I've praised it publicly and brought new customers here. But this is really disappointing.

And I'd love to know how MGleason knows that an engine is not being run to do live analysis on my device. Btw, the device also gets hot when you do post game analysis. Coincidence?

More evidence of this site's insane tablet focus. Go back to V2!

gambitattax

It is the same with Lichess app. Whenever you want s computer analysis, it drains your battery. It will definitely happen on chess.com as well.

Lol.

Then how come I, who play regularly on my iPad and phone have not experienced this.

Or the other thousands of people?

Either.

1. Poor logic

2. Rubbish trolling.

My device (one I used to have) got hot after a minuite or two of use. I had to use it for no more then half an hour, due to worrying about overheating.

McGleason is the chess.com authority on cheat detection!!

When on chess.com, you use WIFI.

Also ahoenning is app updates, etc.

You know when you click the home button twice, and all the little apps come up?

Swipe them up, as they are still working in the background if you don't.

Dude, Viscount though you may be, I've got the latest gen iPad, and can watch YouTube videos without it getting this hot. Nowhere close.
