I think you can get from these posts that generally your parents are quite noramal in the fact that they are teaching you the basic principle in life...you don't get something for nothing...and maybe you should just go for the platinum membership instead of the books..you are 18? get a job and buy some extra chess books if you want..

You expect an 18-year-old to be able to afford them (considering possible jobs he might have at this point)?

No offence to cil in any way.

I've thought about this but most of the time the paycheck goes to college savings, emergency savings (just $2 tho) early retirement (let me dreamSmile) and the rest towards a hour lesson from a local coach i see once in aw while.

I don't like the fact that your parents are bribing and manipulating you. I would never do that to my son. You should help with chores only if you feel it is right to contribute.

isn't this about whats the best choice and not bribery. ciljettu..Wink

Then try to explain why your whole family is made of dark wood, while you're made of light, why don't you.

All people here post all sort of nonsense but when ciljettu posts something not directly related to chess the world collapses!

Most off topic stuff is a 1 off, and a funny (or attempted comedy) to boot.  Your pursuing a controversial topic for many posts, so it's not the same.  Not that I'd tell you to stop, but you and I should be able to see how it's different.

As for the parenting thing, I don't like bribe / retribution stuff either.  But kids need structure, they're not adults, you can't treat them like adults and expect them to understand something as simple as basic empathy (depending on the age).

But if it comes down to anything, it's your giving you kid the tools to be successful in their adult life.  I think starting them out on the road to self-actualization isn't practical in this sense.  Their adult life will surely require them to function with a-holes, unfair consequences, and just normal fair consequences.

But maybe I don't know enough about what you're specifically proposing here.

That sounds really good, I hope it works out with your kids :)  I've never experienced that culture, sounds great.

I'm beginning to suspect you're not 100% keeping up with the flow of the conversation, here.  That's okay.  Carry on.

I missed post 71 also (assuming he did too) because of those annoying comment boxes that hang down on diagrams.

waffllemaster

Thanks. :)   I eventually found it by closing it (didn't even know it was there at first!)

Even when doing a single position with no moves I like to post it as a game, because I find those boxes pretty annoying.

DJAbacus

lol

Phelon

Diamond membership is a wealth of material and learning ability far better than 2 chess books.. a crown is okay, maybe not quite as good as 2 chess books. Tell your parents its diamond or bust.

well congrats on your 6  month old! but in all seriousness come back and talk to me when your child is a few years older. One thing I have learned about being a parent of a pre-teen girl is that all those idealistic theories get thrown out the window or at least face a serious challenge by reality. I am still searching for a copy of that D*mn book that the hosptial gave me with all the answers if you have yours please send me a copy. (parent joke)
