Pawn Chains and Side of Attack

What happens if both players’ pawn chains point to the same side of the board? Would both players mostly attack on the same side of the board, instead of opposite sides? Would experienced players avoid this setup, and if so then why? Also, if my opponent’s pawn chain points to the side of the board with more room, and I haven’t created a pawn chain, is it more strategic for me to attack on the same side of the board as my opponent, or opposite?

By nature of double pawn chains they must point in opposite directions. (Ex: advance French)

I assume you mean a position like the Italian where pawns for white are on d3, e4 and black d6, e5. Both sides can play in the flanks, but usually whoever opens up in the center first has the better chances.
