pawn's first move

Hi,

I'm a vurtual beginner, let's get that straight.  I was doing some of the simple tactics problems, and one of them suggested moving my queen in to check opponent.  From what I could see, there was no reason for computer not to take my queen with a pawn, but it didn't.  Is this because a pawn cannot take a piece on its first move, as I vaguely recall from schooldays?  If so, it's not in the basic rules.

hi wallow-wits...

"Is this because a pawn cannot take a piece on its first move" --> there's no such rule or restriction.  if the computer did not take the queen, i assume its because

a) taking the queen was not the strongest move in the position

b) there was no time to take the queen because there's a bigger threat that needs to be addressed

c) the pawn taking the queen is illegal...but not for the reason you originally thought

d) maybe there was a tactical point the puzzle is trying to tell you that does not involve taking the queen...

anyway, those are just my assumptions.  its hard to tell, really, without actually seeing the position

This rule doesn't exist.

Thanks to all.  Good to know.

I'll have to keep tracking around the tactics boards until I come across it again - must have missed something.

Chess rules aren't that many, I recommend reading them all before playing.
