Pay Attention to the Clock!!!!!!!!!!

I have a question about your opinion. Have you ever been to a tournament when your opponent forgets to hit the clock after his move and you wonder if you should tell him to click it or if you should take a long "think" about your strategy and watch your opponent's clock expire? My chess team coach tells us that it's just part of the game and you shouldn't remind your opponent to click the clock. Is it mean or rude not to remind your opponent?

Give me your opinion and thoughts.

Let it run out, a win is a win.

mercytononeZ

yea that's what i do.

If you don't mind winning that way then allow the clock to run down. It is perfectly legal. If your personal honor won't allow you to do that then that is an acceptable choice too. Smile

I don't want to win that way. In my pool shooting days, if someone was mopping the floor with me on the table, but scratched on the 8 ball, I'd sit down and let him keep the table.  I look at it as it wasn't me winning, it was him losing.  So, unless my opponent is such a tool that he deserves to lose anyway short of cheating, I'll tell them.

What are your ethics and morals? Do what is RIGHT!

I'll pretend to write something on my scoresheet and feign looking at the position deeply. ::shrug:: If my opponent doesn't have the presence of mind to press his own clock he loses a little time and next time he knows better.

Note: My opponents usually give me the same courtesy. ;)

wat is right is to win at all costs!

There's no sportsmanship in chess.  Obviously, do not cheat -- but it's the opponents responsibility to press his own clock.  If s/he has a few minutes left and you really feel sorry for him/her -- go ahead, at this point they're going to lose anyway.  Likewise, if you're playing an 8 year old who doesn't know what s/he is doing, you should tell them.  There's no shame in winning by time.  After all, if the opponent doesn't notice it s/he's either really cocky or not that good of a chessplayer.

would you want your opponent to remind you?  keep in mind also, that you are on a team where your decisions affect others.  listen to your coach and don't worry about it.

Ethics or morals tell me to do unto others as you would have done unto you. I fully expect my opponent to do everything possible within the rules to win.

Of course, everyone should do whatever their conscience tells them.  :)

Copied this, so sorry about the random red words.

Roberto Bisguier, a very strong grandmaster at the time, was tied for first place in the US Open Championships in 1963 with Bobby Fischer. Fischer was on top of the world at the time, and had already won the US Open 4 times, but Bisguier had been playing well, and fancied his chances in the game, which in fact is published and annotated (but without this anecdote) in Fischer's famous book, My 60 Memorable Games.

At some point, Bisguier hears something strange, and looks up to find Fischer snoring lightly, his eyes closed, slumped back in his chair. A glance at Fischer's clock shows that it won't be too long before he will lose on time. History does not record how long Bisguier grappled with his conscience, but he said after the game, "I made the worst move of my career."

"I woke up Bobby Fischer."

Doh! Don't wake a sleeping dragon.  :)
